I hear that Hong Kong is a hip, vibrant and fun place to visit. You are still not making a point. I'm pretty sure most of the people in the US calling for a boycott on China haven't been there either. Now if you have something specific you can tell me that you learned on your visit to China, then you might actually be contributing something to this discussion.
Of course not, you have not been there. It is hard to tell something to someone they have not seen. As for America being better in regards to boycotting the Olympics I already made my point. It is obvious you are looking to spin anything you see so it is a moot point in my eyes.
And the big issue with China is over Tibet. It's the homeland of a native people that was conquered by modern Chinese and then had its native culture suppressed and the invaders culture imposed. Sound familiar? China will give Tibet back to the Tibetans when we give South Dakota back to the Sioux.
Is America perfect? No, but is it better than China? No question. Setting Tibetan issues aside, China's government has a deplorable record of controlling their masses through the burning of churches that aren't considered government approved, forced abortion and sterilization of women in support of their "one child" policy, a veiled encouragement of female child infanticide, total disregard of due process in death penalty cases, surgical experimentation, and that's just for starters. Some of the results of their grand experiments are that they will be left with a population of men who cannot find a mate, a culture that is being shipped overseas, a culling of the population by death penalty for lesser and lesser offenses, and total obfuscation of the truth. Who over there that CAN tell the truth, WILL tell the truth? http://www.christusrex.org/www1/sdc/hr_facts.html#DeathPenalty
We have given the native Americans land. They are allowed to practice their religion and culture. There is no doubt we did them wrong, but it isn't equivalent to what the Chinese are doing to Tibet. Not to mention human rights abuses, worker's rights abuses, severe pollution, and religious suppression. I don't know a lot about China, but there is a lot wrong with what they do. I'm personally more interested in what we do, like dealing with China and exporting so much manufacturing to them. They get a crap load of our money so we can live high on the hog, but it seems to be undermining the stability of our country in many ways.
Social relativism - "hey, we're not perfect so they must be OK, too." What a crock of boosheet. Off the top of my nugget. The Chinese do not have freedom of assembly. The Chinese cannot freely move about their own country without a permit. The Chinese still cannot legally have more than one child, although that is blatently violated as of late. The Chinese internet is significantly censored by the government. The Chinese have absolutely no say in who represents them in government. Chinese, in general, are extremely xenophobic (huge racists). Hong Kong is BARELY Chinese, what with just leaving the British empire. Wonder why Taiwan wants to maintain it's independence? Perhaps you should read up on that. There are THOUSANDS of ways in which Americans would feel in prison in China. When the Chinese break up a protest, they do it with force and violence as the norm. Do you think for a SECOND that a Chinese protester would be able to interrupt a session of their "legislature"? They would neither get within 10 miles of that room nor ever find out what was really discussed. There is no CSPAN in China. China is no pariah state but there is NO comparison between the US and China. You would chafe on an hourly basis unless you enjoy authoritarian control over your life and a corrupt bureaucracy that takes years to do what our inefficient one takes days to do.
The due process is for death penalty cases is a big flaw for China. I like the concept of the death penalty as revenge, but any human process will result in innocents being killed from time to time. That's why I'm against the death penalty in any country. However, the one child policy is practical and necessary. When you live in a nation of 1 Billion, and limited resources, its either a choice between 1 child for everyone, or starvation and lack of necessities for the masses. I don't like the concept of forcing an abortion, but sometimes you have to do things like that in unusual circumstances (1 Billion people)
1. I'm not a Marine. 2. I'm trying to gain insight over why people dislike China so much, not justify their culture or abuses. 3. I know Marines with diverse opinions.
