It's a French carry-over. If you translate the Fr. language literally, that's where you get a lot of our colloquialisms.
Seriously? If so, that's the first moderately logical explanation I've heard. Of course, my podnuhs that use these phrases only have French speakers in their families up to their grandparents.
Yeah, my grandparents are not here anymore but one of my grandmothers used to tell us to "Make our homework". Translation from Faire les devoirs. This is not in regard to the preposition but it's one example. I taught French 15 years ago and can't recall specific ones off hand but remember. The French use infinitives but the literal trans gets lost. Many people used to tell me they spoke French but it wasn't the Real French, it was the Cajun French. I'd laugh because there are instances where the Cajun French is more grammatically correct. (Hard to believe but it's true). I'd also tell them there is no Real French, even English differs from the Northern to the Southern US. A faucet is called a spickett or spiget or something like that (don't know how to spell it) when you go up North.
I know what you mean I'm in Houston now for work, and some of my co-workers made fun of me cause i called a garden hose a hose pipe. Guess that's just a back home thing.
When I get too far from home and people invariably comment on my cajun accent, I just tell them we don't talk funny, they listen funny. Don't let them make you ashamed of your roots/ home culture. :thumb:
