LSU has dynamic enough skill players to run any offense. What they need is a QB, an OC and an off season to install a new offense.
Hopefully O is listening. QB help is on the way, but he needs a quality OC that is also a QB whisperer. Some OC out there is creaming his jeans looking at LSUs roster of offensive studs. Now that Miles is gone it has to be one of if not THE most attractive OC job available.
If your ultimate goal is to beat the Red Devils, win SEC West and SEC Championships, then you have to bring in an innovative Offensive Coordinator. We've been locked in the Stone Ages for so long with Schembechler and Cameron that everybody is Giddy with delight over a little Offense production. You bring in a competent QB with some "Quick Information Processing" skills that can go through progressions, read defenses and throw an accurate/catchable ball and you'll immediately see improvement. (As we did with Etling) Don't be blinded by that. Will take something a little more than what we've seen so far to overtake the Gumps, as we just saw two weeks ago. I didn't like the play calling in the Bama game. Was disappointed in Ensminger. Too conservative and too much of the same ole Miles/Cameron "Trying to run into a Brick Wall" BS. Was hoping for a different Game Plan that might give us that little Edge needed against Rammer Jammer, but it didn't materialize. Just my opinion, but this is what I'd prefer to happen. * Give me Fisher or Herman as HC. * Keep the Defensive staff intact. Give O and Aranda pay raises high enough $$$$$$$$ wise to keep them here. Aranda continues on as DC and O as Associate HC/DL Coach/RC. * Maybe keep Ensminger on as QB coach if the new HC is comfortable with him. * New HC will have to bring in a talented OL coach. I'm not comfortable with Grimes in either his Coaching or Recruiting ability. * Not impressed at all with the technical coaching ability of Dameyune Craig. Great recruiter, but not so great WR Coach. We can do better there. Auburn sure didn't try very hard to keep him on their Staff and he's an Alumnus. Hire a really talented WR Coach that has actually played the position. * Juluke can stay as RB Coach for his Recruiting ability. (And has done a good job with the RB's) * HC will need to hire a great TE Coach that has also played the position. * How about bringing in Charlie Strong to coach Linebackers? No way he's at Texas in 2017. Wouldn't it be something if a "Miracle" occurs and LSU outbids Texas for Herman, then Herman hires Strong to coach LB's at LSU. Don't know if he would be interested in going from "Big Boy" school HC to a position coach. You never know though. All he can do is say no, but you've got to ask. * Raymond can stay on for the same reasons as Juluke. * Maybe it's time for Miles BBQ Buddy BDP to seek Greener Pastures. He's supposed to be a very good recruiter, but the ST's under his watch have been mediocre at best. How about a Frank Beamer protégé to come in and coach ST's. No more Status Quo and Mediocrity for this program. We all love O and what's he's done for the Tigers since LM departed. If Fisher or Herman can't be had for whatever reasons, I wouldn't be PO'ed if O got the job. It is time to raise the bar and get LSU back into the SEC Championship game and beyond thogh. Would be foolish to hire a Head Coach just because he's from Larose Louisiana. Set your sights higher LSU Nation!
With a better OC I think we beat Bama this year, though Etling is limited and the OL may have underperformed also. Neither of those is Eaux's fault this year. Still, we lost by 10 with an awful holding no-call; so far, the best performance against Bama this season. Eaux being from Louisiana is nice, but that's not the only reason to consider him. He has the team playing night and day different with the same plays and players. Bring in his own staff - OC, QB coach, OL coach (I'm not sure Grimes is as bad as he's made out to be), ST coach (BDP has got to go), maybe the strength coach, maybe WRs. He's more likely to retain the good coaches we have on staff and the recruiting class we have coming in. He's been notching some good wins in his short time here. He speaks well. He isn't playing Valentine, he has a good practice regimen, has eliminated apathy on the sideline (see mad dash for the big bertha boot). If we don't choose Eaux he might bolt for HC somewhere else, or worse yet, as associate HC/recruiting coordinator elsewhere. It would be great if we could retain him like you said if we do go in another direction. Peterson lost to USC, so the tiny thought of bringing him over is probably done. Herman has lost a lot of his shine, not to mention a bidding war with Texas is undesirable. He's kind of unproven and he likes to kiss players. I like him better than Jimbo, who would cost a lot and who I think is overrated. I'd give either benefit of the doubt early, but if Eaux wins out and looks good doing it, I'll be disappointed. We could get Eaux for a bargain compared to the caliber of coach we are looking to steal from elsewhere, sign him to something of an interim period (say three/four years with long terms protections for LSU and incentives for Eaux), we could spend that money on an OC and shake ups elsewhere.
The way our line played, Jesus could have been calling the plays against Bama and we'd still have lost. I'm very appreciative of what O and Ens have done with limited time but I'm also not married to being forced into keeping both where they are at. I want to see my options first.
You're going to be reaching a bit if you hire Coach O so you gotta get a proven OC. I like Ensminger but we need someone else if we're going to hire Coach O.
The story here is two parts - #1 our QB - he's ok. His arm is mediocre and his accuracy on the short throws isn't very strong. If we're going to stick with the pro-style offense, we need a big league pocket passer back there that can make all the throws. Like Mett. #2 our OLine- they're ok too. On occasion they open up huge holes and we rip off a big run. The very next 3 plays our RBs get tackled for a loss. Pass blocking is the same. Sometimes Etling has time. Sometimes it looks like a jail break. So I can kind of understand the play-calling. But at least we're trying to move guys out of the box and spread the ball around. We're using the TEs more, and RBs out of the backfield and even the fullbacks too. Going forward, we need to land, and develop, better QB's. Which is something we've known around here for 10 years it seems. And the OLine needs to get stronger, and better all the way around.
