Skip HAS talked to the first guy on your list....duh :dis: I think Petrino could be a great fit for LSU. If he can produce a successful football program at a basketball school, imagine the potential he has at LSU. Petrineaux. :thumb:
Now on this point, I'm with you. I've championed Romeo Crennel's name on this board since early last week before it was even clear Saban was leaving. Being another Belichick disciple (read Parcells), I think he would be the best bet to continue the Saban philosophy here. I've always liked Mike Nolan, but he's been a candidate for this position a couple of times before...not sure why he didn't get it those previous times, but I don't see what could've changed to make him a more viable candidate now. And while I liked Jack Del Rio as a player, I'm not convinced that he's our man...to be honest, I was shocked when Jacksonville hired him a couple of years ago. Final analysis...offense puts a$$es in the seats, but defense wins championships.
One problem with Crennel - when MSU hired Croom last year, he split time between Green Bay and MSU until they got put out of the playoffs. With the Patriots primed to make another Super Bowl run, if he did this it could be February before we get him here if he were hired. Would probably take some big time negotiating and maybe big $$$ paid to the Patriots to get him away from them right now, if it is even possible. Plus, he's an NFL guy, so I think we'd only be renting him for 3 or 4 years if we did get him. I do think he is a quality coach, though. I know they all have drawbacks, but those are a couple of major ones to me.
Why is Mike Stoops from Arizona out of the question? Is it because he just started with them this year? He is supposedly an excellent defensive minded coach. His brother I heard is a pretty good coach. Wouldn't Mike Stoops flourish here at LSU much more so than at Arizona?
That's an excellent question. Now that you've mentioned it I don't recall having seen his name mentioned (or if I did it was rare).
BTW, Didn't Petrino's team beat Fla St when they were #1 a few years back?[/QUOTE] No, John L. Smith was the coach when Louisville beat Free Shoes University. Also FSU wasn't number 1 when Louisville beat them either.
I listed that I wanted him to go after a defensive minded coach - Romeo Crennel, Jack Del Rio, Mike Nolan, or Mike Stoops.
Well then chill out, because we have interviewed Del Rio once and they are planning on interviewing Mike Nolan. Just give it some time.
Got a source on that, by chance? First I've heard of this, and believe me I've been living on these forums the past few days.
