I believe that Saban views the Chicago job much the same as he did the LSU job. The Bears are one of the original NFL franchises with many, many years of history, rabid fans, past success, a new stadium, young talent and an ownership that is committed to winning (well, that's what they'll likely tell him). When Saban looked at LSU's situation in 1999, he saw an original SEC school with a long history, rabid fans, past success, a new upper deck on its stadium and a commitment to facilities, a deep talent pool and an administration committed to winning. I think these are the things he looks for in a job, in addition to the challenge it presents. There are tools for success in Chicago just as there were/are in Baton Rouge. Saban probably believes his formula for success, combined with those tools, can produce a championship winning program. That said, I hope he's not ready for another challenge but, instead, wants to continue building what he has started in Baton Rouge.
Ralph and Chuck, I agree with you. There are good and bad folks in each section of the country and I guess I am guilty of too often of subscribing to stereotypical notions. Heck, my Dad's people were all from Iowa (as was he) and they were fabulous folks.
I've met great people and assholes in New York, Chicago, LA, Houston, Atlanta, Miami and in Louisiana, Mississppi and Alabama. People are people and are what they are no matter where they live.
I don't want him to leave but sooner or later it might happen so we have to be prepared for plan B in case it does happen. I can't think of anyone more proven than Spurrier right now whether everyone here likes it or not. I agree with you 100%!! God knows that I do not ever want to see Saban leave. But if he does leave, would this be the best time for it to happen? Being able to reload with a proven and well known coach that would not even miss a beat with the athletes that Saben has brought to the field, as well as recruiting and facilitys. If it does happen, I think that it would be good for the future of the LSU football team. Because who knows who will be out there in 2 to 3 years.
Bengal B, I ignored you, but you naturally insisted on insulting me for no apparent reason. You are weird. Now you continue to insult me. From now on when I post on the football side of the board here, please ignore me, as I have been doing with you, and things will be all right. I have no interest in discussing anything with a bizarre person like you who insists on engaging in insult matches without provocation. I have no respect for you and place no value on your opinion. Let us just part in mutual contempt.
I actually had a dream last night where Saban was on the sidelines with a black Chicago Bears sweater on....what a nightmare. Up to then I just couldn't see it, but it now seems depressingly real that he could take the Bears job and might actually be a good fit with the Bears. If he leaves I will become a Bears fan. He brought to LSU the crystal trophy that we as fans have been longing for a lifetime. He may feel there is nothing left to accomplish here. Face it, it is extremely difficult to win a NC. Spurrier only had one, Fulmer one, Stoops one, Bowden - how many- two?, Paterno only has two I believe, and the coaches that have never won a NC are too numerous to mention. I am just going to enjoy the moment and I have faith that the LSU football program will be a joy to watch for years to come no matter who the head coach is....though with Saban I would certainly sleep a lot easier.
You know in the changing jobs situation, you often reach a point where you have to take the new job. Sure, it's better, but when you go public and carry out these things in the open you have to go, since your working relationship is changed forever. I'm afraid that even if Nick doesn't want to go he may have to go since the dynamics of this have changed things with the people he work with and the fans of LSU. It does happen.
