I saw a great quarterbacking performance last night, and I also saw a nasty habit...

My theory was always throw to the best receiver till they started doublin or triplin on them then throw to the wide open receiver that they left open, you will actually achieve more yards than if you spread it all over the Field, the 2nd receiver will be wide open and even I can catch a pass if no one is in my face.

I they concentrate on Clayton we other talented WRs such as Henderson, Green, Bowe, Davis and Brazell. Or if they are concentrating on that pass too much just hand it off to Addai, Carey or Vincient.

I agree that Mauck tended to throw to Clayton a little too much. Clayton could get open on little stop patterns against W Ill DBs because they had to respect his speed. Once we get into SEC play, there will be NFL caliber DBs guarding him and stop patterns with MAuck staring at him won't work. They might work once or twice but that third time, the DB will most likely be sitting on the pattern and can break it up or pick it. Thowing to the same guy every time doesn't matter against bad teams that can't adjust, but good teams will change their coverage and take that away from you. I would like to see Mauck practicing looking off the 1st or 2nd guy without looking antsy in the pocket.

That said, Mauck played phenomenal last night and his completion % was almost 70% even with a few drops.

P.S. Everyone check out the week 3 predictions. Looks like someone got all six games correct. They must be smart. Probably good looking and funny too. :D

According to stats on ESPN, Mauck is #8 in the country in passing efficiency - a few spots higher than David Greene. Their stats are nearly identical with Greene having a slight edge in completion percentage and passing yards. But Mauck has a sizable lead in TD passes. I think Saturday will be quite a show. GEAUX TIGERS!!!

Clayton has already proven his ability to beat some of the best SEC D Backs. Keep throwing it to him until he is double and triple covered and then burn the defense with a wide open Henderson, Carey or Brazell.

I am not worried about Mauck zeroing in on Clayton for the same reasons that some are. I think that Mauck did exactly what he was supposed to do. Clayton was the main receiver for the play that was called. The main receiver was open. Mauck delivered the ball to the wide open main receiver. It is as simple as that.

    But...

As fans, we have to ask: What will happen when that main receiver is covered? We don't know yet. There is no way we could have known. We haven't played against anyone who could cover him. We will find that out this week and in the rest of the SEC schedule. I don't think that making Henderson or Green the main receiver would have answered the hard questions about Mauck's ability to execute the offense.

If history is any guide, Mauck won't throw many INTs, but the ball may end up out of bounds on purpose more often than thrown to a secondary receiver. I think that this is a very valid concern and a weakness. How much of a weakness? With as dominating of a receiver as we have in Clayton, I don' t mind it too much. I would rather avoid the INTs and have a few more punts. On the other hand, if we have a couple of injuries at WR, this could be a tough season.

There is no doubt in my mind that Mauck LOOKS much improved in his accuracy from last season. But let's see if that improvement holds when the DBs are faster.
