Those 2nd and 3rd stringers out there that are busting their balls to get playing time in the regular season will disagree with you. What gets me is Vick's decision making. He could've easily thrown that ball away when he saw nothing from the original play. BUT that's how the boy plays. He's definitely one of the best play makers in the NFL. How can you as a coach tell him to forget his instincts and throw it away just because it's preseason. He has so much heart and talent I can only imagine how frustrating it is for him right now...
I agree completely. I think preseason is important. Those few games go a long way in determining the 3-deep depth chart. This is where the new guys get to establish themselves. I doubt the coaches would want to give up preseason games, either. LSUsupaFan, I dont agree with any of that. Michael Vick is a "once in a generation talent". IMO, he is the most talented athlete I have ever seen in a uniform. Granted, my sporting memory is only about 20 years old, but there has been plenty of talent in the last 20 years. Game tape would not have made a difference last year. True, he cant make everyone miss every time, but he sure does do it a lot. He made some of the best LBs, DBs, and (fill in position here) look just plain silly last year. A lot of people said he wouldnt be able to do it in the NFL and he has. We could all probably agree that it was inevitable he would get hurt, but thats his game. And he is good at it.
He has a gun and can scamble but has shown 0 decision making ability. Defenses have film on him and will stop him more and more as his career goes on. He should rely more on his brain and less on his legs before he'll ever do anything special. This injury may be the catalyst for that, but I doubt it.
There is no preseason in college and teams manage to fill out their depth charts without playing 4 or 5 games that don't count I gotta agree with your assessment of Vicks talent. He hasn't yet developed into a great passer but he probably will in time.
True, but dont you think you would learn more about your team by squaring off against someone other than yourself? Maybe Im wrong and the coaches would like to do away with it, but thats just the way I see it. LSUsupaFan, I do agree with that. I think we will develop better decision making, though.
I hope they cut preseason games to 2 because there is no reason to have 4 or 5. What Vick did last year was incredible. I don't know how any sane sports fan can criticize the guy on his abilities. I absolutely HATE the Falcons and was looking for a reason to say Vick was overrated. It's very difficult for a young QB to grasp the speed of the NFL but Vick had no problems. The run against the Vikings and beating the Packers at Lambeau in the playoffs tell me Vick has earned the early hype. I think what most people are saying is, when he puts it all together he could be the best QB ever. I'll admit that those expectations will be almost impossible to achieve but his jaw-dropping talents have made it worth pondering. If you want to criticize anyone, aim your barrel at the media and not Vick.
That run against Minnesota in overtime was one of the best individual plays by anyone in the NFL, ever. When the two defenders, thinking they both had him, dove and then collided with each other as Vick threw it into a higher gear, everyone knew the league had something special. The only few plays that I can think of that can be compared to Vick's play was Bo Jackson's 90+ yard run where he goes on a sweep to the left and, seeing nowhere to go, reverses his field and takes it around the right side for a TD. Also, Marcus Allen's runs in the Super Bowl was great. Barry Sanders also has some great runs. As for Vick as a QB, not that many 2nd year QBs (playing their 1st year as a starter) lead their teams to the playoff victories. Especially a playoff victory in against the Packers in Green Bay, where the Packers have NEVER lost a playoff game. His rating was 81.6 and he completed 55% of his passes with a below par recieving corps. He is a great player and when his leg heals the league should watch out.
