.. and ... let's hope Mett DOESN"T get thrown out prematurely .. as Lee was, thus creating the same scenario. ... and that's my point. Maybe I'm getting the wrong perception, but it seems from your position that you're ready to pull Lee and throw Mett in as starter .. today. You've said it in your post, and so have others .. pp [we can't win a NC with Lee]. I'll repeat .. I think Mett is fantastic. I was all excited last year when I found out that we were going to get a sound, potentially GREAT QB. But .. the reality, Lee is better than he's shown the last two years, and the downfall has been the psychology of it all. He seems to be perking up and showing some maturity this year. In the interests of making sure that Mett doesn't suffer the same fate that Lee did, I don't want him thrown out to the wolves until he is damn good and ready for it. Even a genius will fail the test if he doesn't properly prepare.
isl sees the stud qb behind a guy with average skills. thats probably a correct assessment and it makes sense to have the more talented guy in if so. but theres still a lot of unknowns. whats known now is the guy starting is managing the game. thats exactly the m.o. of this staff. thats what they asked of jordan jefferson. thats not going to change. and thats how it should be. having a gunslinger is not going to make this team better. being risk averse is.
Florida 13, LSU 3. Do you really want to relive that nightmare of an offensive performance? JJ was 100 % risk averse that night. No risk, no glory also applies. The chances of LSU being held to 3 points is minimal, given our better running game than in 09. But the scenario still applies, maybe it will be 13-9 this time around. I had no trouble with Matt Flynn in 07. We didn't sling it all over the field, but at the same time we didn't hide our QB. I would like to find that happy middle like 07. The first 2 games of this season don't show me that with Lee at QB.
your argument is seriously flawed. it assumes Mett will go undefeated. LSU will win with a controlled passing game, few turnovers and a running game. also you ignore than jlee has proven to be able to win games when needed. thats pretty huge. dont ignore it.
In the same token that everybody is expressing excitement for Mett, Lee hit 90% of his passes and threw for 133 yards and a score. I will say that the way Lee folds when the pocket collapses and takes the sack can be looked at a few ways. - He probably should have gotten rid of it, but at least he didn’t throw the pick, which makes a sack look pretty favorable, even on our own 2 yard line. I understand that Mett looked very comfortable and his mechanics looked good. He also came out in the 2nd half, when the makings of a blowout were already in place, NWST weaknesses had already been exploited by our OC, & NWST was already fatigued. Bill King said it best this morning, It's one thing to start a game and finish it, and it’s another to come in mid way and finish it. Both looked good, I stick with Lee until he loses the position due to poor play, he hasn’t done that yet. Mett showed us that if Lee goes down to injury or gets taken out for poor play, we still have a really good chance. And that is not just because we quite possibly have one of the best defenses, running games, and special teams in the country! In Miles I trust, he wants to bring home the crystal this year, and I don’t think he will let any game get away from us before he pulls the trigger on at least a 2 QB system or more Mett than Lee. When we needed that spark in the air, or change of pace, he didn’t waste any time bringing Lee in last year, and JJ was "His Boy" "His QB" Les didn’t waste any time showing the fans Saturday night what Mett can do and gave the kid the entire second half to play, in which yes, maybe he kept it conservative, but stats show Mett actually threw MORE passes than Lee
I'm one of the ones who jumped in to the ZM thread Saturday night with high praise for Mett. My concerns are still the same now as then. Two games into this season, I see nothing wrong with Lee's performance. But here are the facts: vs Oregon, the play calling went 48 runs, 22 passes. That's a 69%/31% ratio. Last week, a number of us said one of the goals for this week should be to throw more in order to better establish confidence in the passing game. In the first half Saturday night, the playcalling went 17 runs, 10 passes, a 63/37 ratio. Still pretty heavily slanted to the run, even though JL was executing the passing game nearly perfect. So with a 25 point lead over a clearly overmatched opponent coached by a close friend of Les (that's important, because you know CLM didn't want to embarrass BDP), why did the playcalling in ZM's first 3 drives suddenly go 10 runs, 9 pass, a much more balanced 53/47 ratio? Its possible The Hat just wanted to see how well he would throw against live competition. But islstl's "hide the QB" comments keep gnawing at me. I want to believe our coaches have confidence in JLee, and in 6 quarters this season, I see no reason they shouldn't. But the play calling doesn't reflect that, IMO.
Well thought out post, and from someone who hasn't made allegiance to either side of the argument. Great use of stats to illustrate your point. Fantastic input.
LSU could have dan marino in his prime and the offensive philosophy would not change much. Les is going to line up and slam it down the defenses throats. with our o-line, it will eventually wear them down. thats just his mentality. Les established the run and got a lead with Lee. Lee got hurt and it was time to see what the backup has. And he looks more fluid, more of a natural quarterback right out the gate, which has quite a few in a lather. its not about Lee really. Your eyes tell you what you saw in Mett. It just a different look of a qb we've not seen in some time. If Lee fails, we will see Mett but dont be shocked if he has similar growing pains that JL had when thrown to the fire, either.
I agree Tirk ... There is a reason that the mantra has been and continues to be "establish the run" with great football teams. Les Miles is no doubt a student of that school. .... and it's because, that's what wins ballgames. I luv a good pass game, but it's the teams with great run games that win the championships. Stanford will not win the NC this year, neither will OU, or any other "passing attack" offense. Oregon has a passing machine ... we beat them with a run game. I'm a big "Hogs" fan behind LSU [hey .. I live in AR, I have no choice], and I see big problems for the Hogs comming up, simply because they have no run game without Kniles Davis. TWilson is a phenomenal passing QB, but I"m skeptical if they will beat Bama .. because Bama has the run. I won't hide my bias .... Lee .. Mett ... just as long as JJ is not back in the picture. I've had all I can take of the "deer in the headlights", confused look, broken plays ... and quite frankly, mediocra running. Every run JJ took was a carry Ridley did not get to take. JJ would take away from Ford and Ware ... who are running the crap out of the ball. If Lee can continue to produce on the short to medium passes for first downs, I see no reason at all this team can't go to the NC and win. If Lee gets hurt, or begins deteriorating, I have no doubt that Mett will be able to step in and help. .... Like I said .. I just don't want to see what happened to Lee happen to Mett by throwing him out to early. Hopefully, we can go into the second half against MState and WV with big leads, and Mett can get more snaps and experience against better secondaries than NWS. I don't want a "two QB" scenario, but just like this last game, when you are comfortably ahead, Mett needs the snaps to build up to next year .... as well as getting the experience in case Lee gets hurt.
Jefferson is gone, dude. Lee has never been risk-averse. Well, you are definitely in the minority. Lee stepped up in a difficult situation and won two games and we're in the top-3. Mettenberger is going to have a bad game at some point, too. Northwestern was no test. I'll say it again . . . It doesn't require Lee to be bad for Mettenberger to be good.
