A friend of mine in Patterson is legendary with WWL radio thanks to Andrew. Not sure how it happened, but they were talking to him on the air as he and his family were hunkered down and while they were on live, the storm ripped the roof off the house.
Yep. I was only about 5 so I don't remember much, just the vague impression of staying up all night listening to the wind. We lived in Gretna. Worst thing to ever happen to the Biloxi/Gulfport area until Katrina.
I've been through some hurricanes as far back as Betsy but the main force of the strong ones had always hit Baton Rouge at night. Gustav was a daytime event. I saw large oak trees being uprooted and lifted up in the air by tornados. I was in my carport when a big branch broke off a pecan tree, bounce on the wire for the cable running to my house and knock a big hole in my next door neighbor's roof. I was without power for 11 days. Too bad @GiantDuckFan wasn't here to enjoy the experience.
Like I said,.. I'd want to watch one from a very nice hotel, with a good view and room service, I don't want to be uncomfortable, sheesh.
Make no mistake, a hurricane party can be one of the greatest times of your life. You just have to select the right group of people and more importantly the right hurricane. Some, maybe even most are just hopped up thunderstorms. Those are the ones.
I'd like to see one of your big boomer thunderstorms too, Shane, I'll take a pass on the tornadoes though. Our thunderstorms out West are little pipsqueaks compared to those east of the Rockies.
Had a great typhoon party in Okinawa...we got a couple of kegs and some hard liquor. At the height of it I took a bed sheet tied the corners together and jumped off the second floor barracks. Flew about 50 feet.
Nothing definite. Seen some video of deep water near house, but at lower elevation. The city GIS site has a flood map, and we are right on the edge. Lost power at 5:16 last night. Almost all the video I have seen on TV from New Bern has been from flood prone areas. Thank you for checking. We are safe!
