Absolutely agree with all of that. Wooden's teacher/mentor abilities as well as his life philosophy is what stands out. To be able to win 10 championships in 12 years and still have the perspective to say "I have always tried to make it clear that basketball is not the ultimate. It is of small importance in comparison to the total life we live.", is pretty amazing. Phil Jackson is as impressive as John on the court, and I think he is a good guy. They are both head and shoulders above who ever is second in their field. For perspective Coach K has been coaching 3 times as long as Wooden, and has half as many championships.
Great post. Agree w/all. To be fair, though, Coach K has coached in a time with much tougher competition throughout the country, not just in one conference, leading to unparalleled parity. He is Wooden-esque in basketball/life philosophy, but Wooden is above all for sure.
Red Auerbach is second in titles to zenmaster Phil. Was coach of the Celtics in the 50's and ,60's. Greg Popovich has 5 titles and Pat Riley 4
Wooden was a great coach, great mentor, and great competitor. His numbers probably won't ever be equaled. He also had Sam Gilbert.
Harris is still too hesitant. He's not going to be given the full compliment of offensive weapons until he is reading coverages well and starts to throw with rhythm.
