Easy to say martin. I had all these "ideal" scenarios of what I wanted family life to be like too. When you have kids it's quickly learned how difficult it ends up being. Also, comparing what you would want to what you did is literally worlds apart. Parents of 20 years ago don't come close to doing what parents today do. It's crazy and gotten to where we've put kids before us. I can remember eating after adults. Now kids eat first. Parents used to make a couple of games (sports). Now they make 98% of them if they're not coaching the team(s). Kids drive nicer vehicles to school than many teachers. Graduating high school kids go to the likes of Cancun for their class trips.
This is true. If I have to go someplace, it's definitely a fend for yourself sort of situation. In the next couple of years, my soon-to-be 11-year-old can do the cooking if I have a late meeting. I used to cook twice a week, starting in 8th grade, when my mom had to work until six. She got pissed when my dad said my burgers were better than hers. My older daughter & I have had a Friday night tradition the past couple of years. She's in a ballet company that rehearses on Friday nights until 7:30. We'll have a mother/daughter dinner at nearby restaurants (nicknamed "the rotation" by my kiddo) when she's done. The past few months, it's actually after my Friday night kickboxing class, so I go to a restaurant in "the rotation" all sweaty.
My family is the worst at eating together...but we all used to work together on th eweekends at the cafe in Abita.
I taught myself to make burgers at about 10. Burgers were one thing my dad cooked that I did not like. He cremated them to extremely well done and then served them on white bread. When I made them, I would ride my bicycle to the store to buy hamburger buns with my money. Dad once made tacos with white bread! I objected, so he open it up put another piece of white bread on top and told me it was a Mexican sloppy Joe.
