$1.5 million   Or a chance to stay at LSU! and win championships while making around $2million more a year. I know it's his alum, but I think thats a no brainer for most people.

Funny to watch posters here spin more than ESPN to justify why they are not wrong on this. It has never been in doubt or disputed that Miles loved Michigan, considered leaving to Michigan, or even in all probability would leave for Michigan.

What has been disputed by Miles, his agent, and A.D. Martin of Michigan in print, telephone interviews and tv interviews, Saturday, Sunday and Monday is that contact was made, a deal was made, and Miles was leaving. This is what was reported Saturday. Not the same perpetual speculation that he would go, but rather he definitely would go after the game.

This has been proven to be incorrect and repeatedly, emphatically refuted by Miles, his agent, Bertman, and Martin. If any proof that a deal was made, it will come out and probably would have come out by now. Check the news - it hasn't. Numerous reporters have backed Miles in to a corner over this and he has not wavered.

Regardless of the truth or timeline, if Miles had agreed to go, the news being leaked 1 day early would not have changed his mind. This is not a decision on tuna or chicken salad. It was for the rest of his career. I can understand him being pissed and embarrassed for being outed, but not him switching back to LSU just because it came out. That makes as much sense as a bag of hammers.

Herb thought he had good info and he was wrong. Regardless, he knew the impact he would have on the players and the possible outcome of that game by releasing his report when he did. I don't pretend that he intentionally tried to influence this, but he sure as heck knew it would, and he just didn't care. Now that he is wrong, ESPN wants to circle the wagons and keep pointing to the men on the grassy knoll.

Where is the smoking gun that proves any of this?

It was 100% for the players. Nothing else mattered to Miles at that point.

The local media (baton rouge) that was in Atlanta were all saying how poor the team looked Friday night in their walk through. Heads down, careless efforts.

He fixed it quick, and I gained a little respect for him when he did.

I think Les just wanted to get the offer from Michigan. It's nice to be offered a job by the ol' Alma Mater, even if you've already decided not to mess up a good thing you already have.

Nick must be kicking his ass for leaving LSU.

When Bill Martin of Michigan called for permission, Skip Bertman reminded him that LSU was "going to get to talk to him (Miles) first." Martin said he understood that. It's been reported (in the Fort Worth newspaper) that the deal was agreed upon around 11:30 p.m. Friday in Atlanta. Chancellor O'Keefe and George Bass agreed to the deal. LSU was going to issue a release Saturday morning, announcing the new agreement. Bass was going to hold off on calling Michigan back until after the LSU release. Kirk Herbstreit's "scoop," however, changed the timing of everything. The Chancellor was the one who encouraged Miles to go to the podium at the Georgia Dome. They were more p*ssed off at ESPN than any other motive.
The real culprits in this were (1) Michigan people/media/etc. who arrogantly assumed that Miles' interest in the job meant that he definitely would accept anything that Bill Martin threw on the table, and (2) ESPN for reporting a story that not only was old news, but was never actually true.
I like Kirk Herbstreit. I hope LSU fans (and Miles) have no hard feelings towards him. He just tried to be a journalist on this one and it burned him. His source (Desmond Howard?) was wrong.

Reminds me of ND firing Ty Willingham thinking they had Urban Meyer wrapped up. They didn't see Urban choosing Florida over ND. Now they got stuck with Weis.
