East Carolina University...27,000 enrolled, stadium is 50K, would be in the Raleigh-Durham market. ACC will not let them in. One isssue is their unis...purple and gold.... Pretty die hard, red neck fans, 130,000 alumni. And they play or have played some pretty good football. Fair basketball, pretty good baseball. A bit down right now, with new coach, but...play exciting football. They play mid tier ACC teams pretty even..not a doormat, but would not be in conference championship for awhile. Would be a new area for SEC And it would be a team in the East! Certainly not an obvious choice, but has some positives.
I assume the LSU faithful on this site will think you are kidding. ECU? Really? I went to one ECU game a few years ago. It was a Thursday night ESPN game against Louisville with the conference title on the line. At that time, your stadium seated 40,000, and at least half of the seats were empty. Not thinking it's an SEC fit. Call the Big East.
Interesting suggestion. You make some good positive points. Last year, they were 6-7, and 5-3 in Conference USA. They gave up an average of 44 points a game, including 76(!) to Navy, 62 to Rice and 51 to Maryland in the Military Bowl. Their offense topped the half-century mark twice, in wins over Tulsa and UAB. I think the big fear in bringing in an ECU-level program is that they would be overwhelmed at the outset. They could dig themselves a hole that they can't get out of, and you don't want to add a program to see them become a perennial cellar-dweller. Adding majors is a much safer bet.
I won't waste time trying to convince you ECU is a good choice. Most folks minds are already made up and nothing I say here will change it. However, I would challenge you to prove what you said about the Thursday night game against Louisville. Simply not true but we appreciate you being one of the 39,775 that attended. Not SEC numbers by any means, but it shows your statement is simply false. Keep in mind, we are now drawing 50K per game and have approval to expand to 60K. Don't you think if we had LSU, Florida, Alabama coming in that we'd probably have to go to 70K? Yes, those were gaudy numbers we gave up last year. Doubt they will have a hill of beans t do with expansion decisions. It was an anomaly that occurred after getting a brand new staff, loss of several players and injuries. Yea, we'd struggle for awhile, but we'd compete as always.
All I will say is Pirates remain "Undaunted" (L) Want you boys to know, I sat in the Orange bowl game in 1983 in the middle of Nebraska fans pulling for your Tigers. If I never hear "Go Big Red" again before I die, that would be a blessing. Geaux Tigers!! U N D A U N T E D
You are correct ecpir8. That was the attendence, and I realized I exaggerated the crowd after I looked it up, and I apoligize for that. The listed attendence was 39,000+, obviously more than half full, although I guarentee there weren't 39k in attendence. Listed attendence are paid tickets, and not people thru the turnstyle. The game was in 2001 dcboy76. I recall rolling into Greenville last minute, and easily sitting on the 50 yard line. I will say I enjoyed the atmosphere, and a good game. I kind of enjoyed the whole "first down...Pirates" cheer after each first down.
