First of all, we did not spend our way out of the depression. WWII ended the depression. Not deficit spending. Nor did deficit spending work in the 60s. And our spending had nothing to do with the fall of the Soviet Unioin. It did itself in.

Republicans are for a free market economy - not a demand economy. Trade wars are lose-lose propositions. Yes, the free trade agreements have resulted in some companies going overseas. But it has also allowed foreign companies to build in the United States. So you are only looking at one side of the equation.

Reagonomics is simple supply-side economics. It was runaway congressional spending that caused the deficit during Reagan's term; not his economics.

red doesnt determine what market price is. the market price is what somebody is wiling to do the work for nd somebody is willing to pay. if you are nationalist or racist or whatever and unwilling to employ people because they are mexican, then you are paying above market price.

yes and what did we do during WWII? We spent money like crazy. It wasn't the war, it was wartime spending that pulled the economy out of the Depression.

Who said anything about deficit spending? You said democratic spending could not lead to prosperity. The 50's and 60's were wildly properous, from democratic spending.

Read the history books, again. We outspent the Soviet Union. They had to spend such a large portion of the GDP on defense that it absolutely ruined their economy. When Reagan started the "Star Wars" program, the Soviets knew they couldn't afford to match it. Thus began the downfall of the Soviet Union. Finally new leaders like Gorbachev and Yeltsen emerged. World War III was a economic war and we won it by outspending the Soviets.

Its a one-sided equation, don't you think. The United States ran a record trade deficit in 2006 for the fifth consecutive year. The gap between what the US sells abroad and what it imports, reached a new high of $763.3 billion last year.

Most people disagree. Supply-side economics simply didn't work. That's why Clinton was elected and presided over a huge economic boom.

It wasn't government spending. The country was not producing much in the way of consumer products. The national economy was geared toward producing war materials. What WWII did was end unemployment. It is not government spending that drives the economy; it is consumer spending.

Eisenhower was president during most of the 50's. Last I heard he was a Republican.

The "Star Wars" program never got off the ground. But I agree it did make the Soviet Union realize they could not catch up with us technilogically. The Soviet Union was a command economy focused on government spending instead of consumer spending. That is one reason why it failed - not the only reason, but one.

Supply and demand economics always works. Clinton, as I recall, did not have a huge spending program. To his credit, he was able to balance the budget. No deficit spending.

You always try to personalize an argument that you're losing, I've noticed. This isn't about Red setting a market price. It surely isn't about racism or nationalism. Give us a break.

Are you seriously trying to argue that it is the "free market" for an foreign national who doesn't pay taxes or invest his money here, and who criminally entered the country to illegally take jobs away from the law-abiding, tax-paying Americans living here, many of whom are also Hispanic?

    Are you completely daft?

This isn't just lettuce pickers in Texas. Every construction job or landscaper in Baton Rouge has illegal Mexican criminals working for pay WAY below what Americans who have mortgages, car notes, and who pay taxes can afford to work for. Restaurant bus boys and kitchen help are mexicans and so are the hotel maids. I was served at Jason's Deli recently by a person who couldn't speak English.

    Reuben sandwich, por favor?

It leaves us with a lot of locals with no jobs sitting around and getting in trouble. Crime is way up in Baton Rouge. Personally I would rather pay a little more for my Reuben sandwich and keep the local indigenous population working and happy.

Last I heard, the 1950's Congress was Democratic.

Oh yes it did! It never got much publicity because the threat diminished and the security was tight, but vast sums were spent on research, development, production, and deployment of Star Wars weaponry. The fact that we have operational anti-satellite capability and new balistic missile interceptors that actually work is from SDI funding. The new generation of directed energy weapons is a major SDI achievement. High energy lasers, directed microwaves, and particle beam weapons are emerging from deep black security and are about to change the way we fight wars.

i am speaking about more than just the mexican illegal. i mean him, and i mean the chinese factory worker, the indian call center, any worker who will do a task for less than an american. this started when you mentioned how big businesses screw up america with outsourcing. my point is that paying market prices is not a bad thing, even if that means paying someone who isnt american.

the mexican in our example would work for less even if taxes are paid, that is beside the point. another issue. of course i oppose paying illegals who are not paying taxes. but i also favor free imigration and outsourcing as much as possible. it is a waste of money to pay americans more than something is worrth. a corporation that outsources in not hurting america, they are helping it, and the world.

blimey, i'm not daft, thats rubbish.

maybe if thesemexicans work hard enough, they wil have mortgages and car notes. i wish them the best. and i know they are literally criminals in the sense that they are illegal, but that is a bit of an unfair way to portray them. they just want to work, i respect them. it sucks for them they were born in a ****ty place. i would do the same thin they are doing.

is that supposed to be a negative? you are saving money by having these people work where you shop. plus, you get to broaden your horizons and practice your spanish. nothing pleases me more than dealing with a person who only speaks spanish. gives me a chance to work on pronunciation.

You have come far, Grasshoppa. You realize that there is a gray area here and it is not a black & white world. You wisely see the need for compromise and a moderate position to obtain the best of both ideals for the good of the many.
