If Mauck returns he is the starter. JR or Flynn will be the backup. I hope that Marcus gets his degree and lives a great life. I also hope that he is never in a game where we need him to lead us to a victory. He is a GREAT guy, but a average QB.
I think the way the season plays out will determine if Mauck returns. If he leads LSU to 5 more victories and is the undisputed starter for next year, I would think he'd come back. I'll admit I would be extremely nervous with Randall as our starting QB but he does not "suck." He played well in his first start bringing the Tigers back to beat South Carolina. Although he played horrible against Auburn & Bama, he had incredibly efficient passing stats for the last two regular season games (Ole Piss & Ark) and first half of the Cotton Bowl. If anyone has those stats, please post. I know it was like a combined 60% completion with 4 TDs and 0 Ints. It's impossible for us to measure how significant his leg injury sustained in the 1st half of the Cotton Bowl actually was but he looked like our QB of the future before the injury. I probably would've rather had him in there with 1 leg than 'lil Claussen. I say we just all take the advice of TigerWins.
Dude, those aren't just "thoughts." they are the NCAA rules. I have READ them. As a matter of fact, I posted excerpts, therefrom, on this board several weeks ago. All redshirts are NOT medical (hardship) redshirts! The overwhelming majority of situations in which a student athlete gets a fifth year of eligibility are cases under the "redshirt" rule. Under this rule, the athlete cannot play a bit at any time during the season. If a kid doesn't step onto the field of play (against outside competition), he/she AUTOMATICALLY gets the extra year. The "medical redshirt" rule does not automatically grant a player an extra year of eligiblity, regardless of how much time that player saw on the field. A petition must be filed with the NCAA on behalf of the player. The NCAA then determines whether or not that player shall receive the additional year of eligibility. So, dude, I am not totally off on anything. Go read the NCAA rules, and then you will be "educated." :geaux:
ST has it right based on today's NCAA. TE's train of thought is correct for the redshirts of old. Sorry TE, it used to be that way but things have changed since then. Amp Hill will get a redshirt, and not a medical redshirt since he never stepped onto the field. Hypothetically, had someone like Carey played 2-3 games, blew out his ACL and been out for the rest of the season, LSU would petition for a medical redshirt, which likely would have been granted. The NCAA has been very tight on giving out medical redshirts the last few years. This typically only happens when a player has played less than half of the season and suffers a season-ending injury, and the school petitions for this redshirt. On very rare occasion, I think this can result in a 6th year of eligibility.
C'mon, dude, you CAN'T be serious! Medical hardhips are generally granted only when the athlete suffers serious, serious, injury. These almost always require surgery. Are you saying that more than one college has actually made one of its players go under the knife, or they just find hospitals and doctors to lie and phony up documents for them??? You may be thinking of the NBA, in which every team always has a couple of guys with some sort of "injury" on its Injured Reserve. :geaux:
i am beginning to wonder just how educated TE really is....perhaps his anger towards the world is making him forget his vast knowledge of it....
Exactly right, Podnuh. Thank you. There are rare six year players. But these players don't play in nearly six, or even five years' worth of games. If Amp Hill were to suffer another injury in the first few games next year and be out for the season - that is, out for the season with no realistic chance at all to play due to the severity of the injury, then LSU could petition for a sixth year for him. If he got it, he could, conceivably play in every game for four years plus three or so games in the fifth year (his redshirt Freshman season). I believe LSU would get to make the application for the extra season following his 5th year. Then, I believe, the odds would be against him getting the sixth year, particularly if he played in all or most of those games during the three years after he returned from his injury.
Here you go. In the 7 games that Marcus Randall started, he went 3-4, losing to Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas (who we shouldve beaten), and Texas. He actually played a hell of a game against Arkansas, but oh well. For those 7 games, he went 83-173 for 1140 yards, 7 TDs, 5 INTs, a completion percentage of 47.9%, and a rating of 95.3. If we take out Randalls stats from the Auburn and Alabama games, he is 68-136 for 1022 yards, 7 TDs, 1 INT, a completion percentage of 50%, and a rating of 138.72. We could go even further and eliminate the Texas game. Then he is 49-91 for 829 yards, 6 TDs, 0 INTs, a completion percentage of 53.8%, and a rating of 153.1. This would include games against South Carolina, Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Arkansas. EDIT: Oops, you specifically mentioned the last two games independently. So against Ole Miss and Arkansas, Randall was 27-45 for 382 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, a completion percentage of 60%, and a rating of 155.3. The Kentucky game was the highest rated performance for Randall, finishing 10-23 for 264 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs, and a rating of 182.9
Those stats do back up the argument that MR is mediocre, at best, and either one of the redshirt freshman next year should be at least as good as him. But, I don't need stats. I look at MR on the field and I always see that "brook trout" look. I love him because he dons the purple and gold, but I do not for a second believe that he can lead my beloved Tigers to great heights at quarterback. :geaux:
i am so sorry i started this thread..my opinion has led to full blown chaos amongst the TF.com members. someone please shoot me.
