Dude, you're totally off on your redshirt thoughts, Spring Tiger... If that's the case, how did Kenderick Allen get a 5th year of eligibility? Any player can play in the first six games of the year, as long as he does not play more than 20-25% of the snaps when it's all added up and totaled. If a player suits up after the sixth game and plays at ALL, then and only then does the player lose all chances of eligibility. All redshirts are MEDICAL REDSHIRTS.
Here's a sample of extenuating circumstances that the NCAA will allow for in regards to medically redshirting players. I assure that you more than one college has "conjured up" injuries to young players after letting them see the field in the early going. http://www.ncaa.org/databases/regional_seminars/guide_rules_compliance/enforcement/enf_02d.html
You're right. McMullen came in for Ohio State in relief of Krenzell who was injured and did nothing but throw the game-winning TD. So, backups CAN provide quality play. I don't think Randall played THAT bad, though he wasn't spectacular.
A few thoughts: 1. If Mauck returns he will be the starter unless someone takes it away from him. 2. None of us have seen Flynn or Russell yet. Who knows if they have the stuff to take away a veteran starter's job? It could happen, but I ain't holding my breath. 3. One good thing about Randall is he has some game experience. That is a good thing to have in a backup QB. 4. Rookie QB's will make mistakes. Mauck and Randall are past theirs, Russell and Flynn still have to get through them. Better they get that early playing time as reserves, not as starters. Here's to Matt Mauck returning for his senior year.
Randall sucks. He lost LSU the Bama and Barn games last year as well as the Cotton Bowl. He did not get uus within one win of the SEC Championship, he was the reason LSU did not get there.
1. If Mauck stays, he will be the man. 2. If Mauck leaves, the starting job will be decided in the Spring, like it is every year. The most recent comments were that Flynn has a better grasp of the offense, however, Russell still is clearly the better athlete. The question comes in as to how hard do these guys work in the offseason to improve their areas of weakness? If No. 2 happens, the Spring will decide the starter. For the sake of the team, lets hope that No. 1 comes true. Mauck may not be the most gifted QB in the league, but this guy understands are system and knows how to win in it. Remember a guy named Wuerffel that knew how to play in a system...
im not in the mood to read all of these post but as far as I am concerned Saban will make the right decision he knows what each is capable and hosestly we do not have much of a clue. There is a reason why he makes the big bucks and thats to make sure he puts the best men he has on the field at any given time if that means its Randall all next year than fine. If it means Randall starts while Russell slowly takes over. Or if it means that Russell gets the start from the get go. The one thing that bothers me now is why talk about this it has no meaning to the season were in right now. And what if for some reason Mauck sticks around for another season. I personally havnt heard of any defenite statement that he is gone to dental school.
I know this may be a novel approach .... but why don't we let the man who makes $1.6 mil make this decision?
This is simply LUDICROUS! If Mauck returns next year he WILL be the starter and will remain in that role unless he gets hurt. End of story. I don't see how anyone in their right mind could even speculate that Mauck could be challenged for the starting QB position as a 5th year senior with the track record he and the team would have with him under center! Mac Brown is NOT coaching LSU!!!! Get real!
