I can't wait until they eat Nick Saban alive in Bama. I love watching Bama fans implode. They are genuine delusional nutjobs.
Here is a related story by SI: :dis: :hihi: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/stewart_mandel/04/09/alabama/index.html
The article, along with the author, seems to lack a lot of credibility. For one thing, Saban was not overrated. He earned the accolades he got by doing two things: recruiting and winning. It seems to me that this "sports journalist" has one thing in common with most sports journalist - a heck of a lot of arrogance. If you believe this journalist, Saban got where he is because of the media. Yea, right. The journalist feel, as do so many of his kind, that coaches should prostrate themsevles before the sports reporters and pay due homage for everything the journalists have given them. This is not to say that any coach is beyond criticism, but before criticizing Saban or any coach with policies dealing with practice and interviews, a real journalist would try to find out the reasons for the policies. I know that Miles does not allow freshmen to speak with news media because they are often not mature enough to handle the sports media, and it could end up doing them and the university some harm. Frankly, I just am not impressed with this guy.
And the season has yet to begin. Don't give the media things to cover and talk about and they will find things to talk about. :dis:
This writer is definitely arrogant to believe that the media is responsible for Nick's financial situation, but he's partially correct about being overrated. Saban's agent, Sexton, has been a big part of getting his name into every job opening. This made him look more appealing because it seemed like everyone wanted him. Nick got a lot of credit for what he did at Michigan St where as coaches who have had similar success at similar instituations rarely get the same kind of credit. People talk about how Saban turned around that program, but Miles basically did the same thing at Oklahoma St. Also as a side note, look at who Saban suggested take over his position at Michigan St (the guy that got the job, can't remember his name), then who he suggested for LSU's job - Houston Nutt. He's an egomaniac and didn't want the program to have the same success without him. And since LSU has, well, he's just gone ahead and taken credit for it.
Saban had a pretty strict media policy when he was at LSU, but it's gotten a lot worse since he's moved to Bama. I heard somewhere that the bama reports are basically not allowed to ask any questions that ask for comparison, speculation, or evaluation. IF this is true WTF are reporters supposed to ask?
btw I believe the source for the above info on the bama questioning restrictions was Carl Dubois on the Jimmy Ott radio show on last week.
Saban is a nut job. A very rich physco nut job. He did not win a NC for LSU. The players won a NC for LSU. I'll take our current coach over nut job any day of the week. Oh, and for all the 'Bama lurkers, like the old BTO song says "You ain't seen nothing yet".
I think that Saban knows full well that he has a long long way to go before 'Bama is in any shape to challenge for an SEC Championship. The media frenzy, now totally focused on unrealistic expectations, could easily put too much pressure on his younger players to mature much sooner than they are ready to. If I were Saban, I would possibly designate about 4 Seniors, who might be potential NFL candidates, to talk about the objectives of the team. The truth is, Saban will probably get his ass handed to him by LSU, Auburn and Georgia this season. 5-3 is possible, but I doubt that most 'Bama fans are going to want to hear that 4-4 is most likely to be 'Bama's conference record in 2007.
