Ask yourself, would you trade in the feeling after LSU won the National Championship in 2003 for Nick Saban never being at LSU ? He may not have single handedly delivered it but the man at the top takes most of the heat and also gets the credit. I've heard so many "stories" ( e. g. His wife was paid a large sum of money in a paper bag) and "theories" about how and why Nick Saban left LSU that I can't even remember them all. Glad he was here, was sorry to see him go, Les Miles is now the man in charge and I'm pulling for him to be very successful.
Honest thought on Nick Saban? Why, some 55 days out from Les Miles first game as LSU coach and 65 or so from Nick Saban's first as Miami Dolphins coach, are we discussing Nick Saban, ex-LSU coach? Isn't this the sort of thing you do, say, in March? May? These days, I want to talk about the upcoming season---one rich with possibilities for this LSU team---until I'm blue in the face. Who's our QB? Can Les Miles be a solid gameday coach? Will he give his very talented coordinators enough leeway to run their respective shows? How will Les keep the team on an even keel? When will we get our first "let 'er rip" moment with Les wearing purple and gold? Will the West Deck be finished on time? What will it look like when it is? How about Mike the Tiger's new crib? Will Les give Justin Vincent a true shot at winning some playing time? How's Amp Hill looking these days? Skylar Green, for that matter? Is there a better freaking OL in all of America than the road pavers we have up front this season? I wish Nick the best in Miami...except when they play the Saints, of course. That's the exent of my "thoughts" on Saban right now.
Fair enough Tejas...by the way, I gave this site a great plug on the show today. I was very complimentary. A guy called in asked where the best LSU site was and I told him hands down it is Tiger Forums. THE BEST DAMN LSU MESSAGE BOARD IN THE LAND!
i know no one who dislikes saban or discounts his greatness while at LSU. Some take cheapshots like myself as a joke due to the inherent lying that comes with looking for a new job. its business, nothing more. if you find someone who holds a grudge b/c of his christmas special last year then that's their right. some held saban in the highest regard and believed every word out of his mouth. its human nature for some to react that way. the fact cparso said he is going to be looked at as a better coach than he actually was is laughable. I saw his career numbers as a HC a year or two ago and defensively its surreal how good his numbers are. I'll try to post them. saban is a great, great football mind/coach. there is no mistake about that. LSU fans will forever be indebted to the dude for getting us out of the cellar and to the top of the heap. however, its a new year and Les Miles may have surrounded himself with the best overall talent not only with football players (thanks to nick) but the coaching staff as well. I am overly impressed with these guys from dunbar to pellini. if saban had a fault it was his paranoia and ego not wanting his staff to be in the spotlight. Looks like Miles cares more about the quality of his overall staff regardless if held in higher regard than himself which is refreshing. either way it comes down to wins so we will see. also, stripes makes some valid points as well. saban is no idiot and knew he could make more progress in a short time here than any other place looking for a HC.
Tirk, I could not agree more... It's all about results and we have two sec titles and a nat champ to show while under NS. Was he perfect? no, but who is?
Nick is one of the best coaches in football. LSU fans should be gratefull to what he did at and for LSU. A national championship. Now, no one should complain about how Nick left LSU and about hurt feelings on how he left and on how he said he wasn't interested in leaving and how he loved it in Baton Rouge, etc. Why? He did the same thing in 1999 when he left Michigan State for LSU and he said those same things in East Lansing. I mean you saw the same thing in 1999. That's just the way he is. Sure, he isn't the most gracefull of people, but hey he's a winner. Look up what Leo Durocher said. He didn't say, "nice guys finish last." He said something about all those nice guys being in last place. So Nick is like that. If you want nice the bottom of the SEC West is waiting.
uh-oh. les miles is one of the nicest cats ever. (yeah yeah i know he can be tough when he needs to be but save it. :hihi: :hihi: )
Okay, when I said that Saban will be remembered as a better coach than he is - I didn't mean that he wasn't talented or anything. I just think that a big reason he was able to win so many games was based on the other things he did. Mainly, his ability to recruit, find good staff, & get the university behind him in funding the proper facilities. These are all things that any successful coach must be able to do. I just feel like Nick was especially good at them, and those are more so the reasons behind LSU's success under him than his "coaching" per say.
