I used to love it when Fred G. Sanford would do his Ink Spots imitation..."Ahnd would I be sure...." :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:
Grayson's chip beef sandwich is one of a kind. None better anywhere. Had a couple last week. My dad used to take me to the old place off the Winnfield highway before they moved to Clarence. That family has sold a lot of fine bar-b-que over the years. The old man and later, his sons, were really nice. The grandchildren handle it now I think. If old man George was still around, my guess is he'd run their asses off or they'd become more customer friendly in a hurry.
This was always our half-way-there stop on the way to Tiger Stadium when I was a kid. I'd never seen melted cheese on apple pie before. Good ham and pies. The old man that started the place, Mr. Lea (Johnston ?) used to make his way around the restaurant and have fun with all the customers. He always reminded me of Colonel Sanders.
New Orleans - Mamma Gamble's - off of Canal St. near Tulane - awesome soul food Chinese King on Elysian Fields near UNO. Gretna - I used to own a bar there, and I would eat at this place that had the best fried shrimp and baked macaroni.....Also the mexican place on Stumpf Blvd. across from the Home Depot. (will remember the names and post in follow up) Hammond - Hi-Ho Barbecue - awesome homemade little BBQ Pork or Beef sandwhich for the price of a small burger at McD's or BK.
Fleur-de-lis -- In Baton Rouge. Excellent thin chicago pizza, crowded bar, cold long-necks, country music. I get the Round-The-World with anchovies.
Pork Chop Johns in Butte, Montana. Talk about off the beaten patch. The local specialty is the pork chop sandwich and they make a damn fine one here. Breaded like a steak sandwich. Big fried pork chop on a bun, with tater tots and applesauce on the side.
now this is what a pizza place and all other eateries should be. great fresh food with ice cold longnecks. oh me too but minus the hairy sardines on my pizza.
Don't know if qualifies as "hole in the wall" (probably borderline) but I like Pho Tau Bay on Carrolton between Iberville and Bienville. I can't get enough of their fresh spring rolls. There is also a little Salvodorian place on the West Bank (on Westbank Expressway in Gretna). Pupuseria Divino Corazon is great and definitely qualifies as a hole in the wall.
