I am good friends with a retired religous studies professor, but his answer may be a little biased as he a Roman Catholic priest.

All I can do is disagree. I've made my points already.

Well, actually I'm an LSU researcher, does that give me extra credibility? No, I'm not an historian, just a voracious reader of non-fiction. I don't know who the local experts are, this is a big school. Moreover I doubt if they would give a damn about our little argument. And I doubt if we would agree on their opinion, anyway.

Many issues can never be entirely settled, but we can agree to disagree. Perhaps in future debates you will think twice about making categorial statements that are actually just your opinions. Perhaps I will be more perceptive about distinguishing between the two in your posts.

After all, martin declares each of his opinions to be internationally recognized facts, undeniable and the product of genius. I quit letting that annoy me long ago, and now consider all of his proclamations to be personal opinion automatically.

I really refer to the parts written in the first century. Christianity as we know it didn't exist yet. Jesus was a Jew as were all of his early followers. Christianity didn't start to evolve until after the writings of Paul. The Essenes who wrote the Dead Sea Scrolls wrote about Judaism which would have included Jesus and the Christian Jews.

The Essenes were a messianic Jewish sect and sowed many of the seeds of Christian thought. Most early Christians were former Essenes. It strains credibility to imagine that so detailed an account of their world does not mention a figure who was widely acclaimed as the Messiah and was executed by the Romans for it. Not to mention rising from the dead, among other miracles.

No problem, just thought we could have some "closure" one way or the other for the discussion. I guess we'll have to leave it unresolved. By the way, I wasn't in any way suggesting it would sway anyone's opinion, just that it would be an answer one way or the other.

On to the my next issue....what am I going to have for lunch? :hihi:

well, i am basically always right. if i am not, i dont argue.

in fact i left his alone because it is pointless and there would be no way for me to demonstrate who is right. history like this is so unknowable. besides, who cares if a dude existed. i can see any number of dudes everywhere i go. none of them are magic either.

you either admit that people cannot walk on water and rise from the dead, or you are insane and brainwashed and you do not. discussing ancient history is pointless, and opinions on whether this jackass (jesus) existed are totally pointless.

the correct answer to this stupid debate is that it is generally accepted that jesus existed, but it isnt necessarily true. he might not have, but it is pretty hard to tell and definitely doesnt matter.

    the end.
