Well, it won't be done all at once and perhaps the experience with the first corridor or two will prove it's feasibility or not. But if we are going to be spending money to stimulate the economy, then permanent infrastructure like this seems a better investment than some of the more ephemeral projects out there.
I could see myself using this to take trips from Houston to New Orleans to visit family, and the family taking it to come here. Better than sitting behind the wheel for 6 hours as long as the price is reasonable.
i would argue that the profitability will only rise as the network becomes more extensive and gas prices escalate. i wonder though, if this became popular, would it become just a slower airplane? you have to get to the station, do you have to get there 2hrs early to check bags and pass security? will there be connections with long layovers?
i took amtrak from portland to seattle several times for mariners games. drops you right at the stadium and bring a few friends and the railcar becomes a party car. could you imagine what the train would be like if it would drop people within walking distance of Tiger Stadium? One heckuva party on game day.
The only difference is that they're planning on spending billions here in America on something for Americans instead of something for China, Afghanistan or Somolia. Build it. Build it and I will come...
Why not? After all, it will be our great, great, great grandkids that will be paying the bills for this administration so we might as well enjoy life while we can. At least this will benefit people unlike many of the "green" projects and pork...ooops...I mean great stimulus plan!
If this comes about, what do you think VP Biden's hand will be in it? We all know that Amtrak is his baby.
