If you've ever played organized football then certainly you had a coach tell you that there's a difference between playing 'hurt' and playing 'injured.'
I didn't take anything from this other than that Oliver wanted to rattle Leak. I don't think he wants to injure him. Just different POV's...
Aggressiveness... Anger... You "If-Saban-were-still-here" think that he didn't get the defense motivated by telling them to hurt the other team? "Alright guys, were are gong to face a really really good quarterback this weekend... Our plan is for us to put tremendous pressure on him. If you can get to him, just knock him down... No need to hit him hard. He has an injured arm, so just hit his legs if you can. Don't hit him from behind either, because that could cause some whiplash problems....."
Back in the day, I ALWAYS wanted to hurt my opponent. Ring his bell (texas tech video notwithstanding). Cause pain. Get him thinking about me for a few plays. This is NOT the same as wishing to cause an INJURY. I does not imply malice nor an intent to break the rules. THose who don't understand the difference will never get it and almost certainly did not play organized ball at any level. I believe, if asked, Leak would get it. I'm sure he expects no less from his opponents or, for that matter, his O-linemen or the rest of his teammates. What was it Knute said? "Football isn't a contact sport. Dancing is a contact sport. Football is a HITTING sport!!"
Oh man... I can't wait to see what Oliver can do! That goes for the rest of the guys going after Leak too. call me sick, call me what you will. But watching Ken Hollis hit people is worth both of my LSU tickets for saturday. SMACK BITCH
Guys you are missing my point. I am all for hitting hard and i know football is a contact sport. I grew up with a freaking football coach. Played football and i never tried to hurt anyone. Maybe i am nitpicking at the wording. But lets play the what if's? Oliver gets loose and has an open shot on Leak and uses his helmet to cause a severe injury ( In another words " Hurt " ) him badly. Do you want to see Chris Leak hauled off in an ambulance ? You play the game as hard as you can and you play it to win but you dont play it to hurt people. I hope he did mean it like you guys are saying.
There's the problem. That wouldn't be "hurting" him - it would be injuring him, which I think is the distinction we are drawing.
Is this a trick question? Its the same reason why people watch nascar... at least its why I watch nascar wrecks... Sorry, just my opinion...
im sure he didnt mean injure him for ever. You have to have this attitude to play defense im glad to see a little fire out of oliver and cant wait to see this defense play again
These guys are football players, not law students. I think it's unrealistic to expect them to always choose the most appropriate wording. Defensive linemen like hitting the quarterback and the harder the better. I don't have a problem with it.
