One of the big problems with the Viet Nam conflict was that the powers that be tried to appease the media and the voting public while trying to fight a determined enemy. This a a trap that Bush hasn't fallen into...yet.

    Agree with SabanFan!
It wasn't the wrong war at the wrong time unless you are talking about Lyndon Johnson as president.
As good as Truman was as president of a war, Johnson was the opposite,
    probably the worst president ever...

Anyway, when you look at the conflicts like Korea and Vietnam you have to
consider our fight against communism, we were trying to deter the communists from taking over the world the way Hitler tried to do.

Lets see, Mac Arthur and Patton wanted to geaux ahead to Russia after WWII, Damn those were real men, my kind of leaders.
If that would've happened there never would've been a Vietnam!

    Or the Cold war!

gotta wonder where we would be now if we went ahead with gulf war one... I really wish we would have gotten it done then... would've avoided many many more problems.

    anyone know why we didn't.

Or we just would have had the problems of a lengthy poorly planned occupation then. Bush I was too smart for that.

I've always read that the reasons were twofold:

    1) There was a lot of concern about upsetting the power balance in the region, and the thinking that Saddam was better than Iran.

    2) Bush, Sr. had serious reservations about our ability to effectively take over the country then, and didn't want to overcommit.

I believe that the democrats started complaining that Bush I needed to get out of Iraq, and he did.

We didn't finish the job then, but we should have.

That's completely wrong. Bush did not want the troops overseas more than 100 days. He never intended to finish the job and he has said this multiple times.
