I saw an interview this morning with a man and his family. They were being turned away in Houston, moving on to San Antonio. Resignation and bitterness were in his voice. He was calling on "His" people to be men, to do the right thing. He was humiliated by the actions of the thugs in the Super Dome and Convention Center. I think if you got away from the sound bites and video clips you would find many more like him. He had the cutest little girl in a big floppy hat. He had a wife who was strong enough to help them to keep moving till they got help.

I don't think they are ungrateful. I think they are desperate. I think they are scared. I think they have a right to be. If you have a small child, you know that child cannot exist without your assistance. These people now see the world as a child would. The normalcy of their life served the role of a parent. They lost that parent.

When a child is lost in a store, other adults come and help. An overhead announcement is made. They lock doors to prevent the child from becoming the victim of a predator. They don't fault the child for being lost. They don't chastise the child for failing to say thank you when reunited with the parent. The adults derive satisfaction from helping, not from the recognition.

The anger against the predators is most warranted. Sanctions against them should be brutal and fatal. Be careful though, the predators in this case bear a strong resemblance to the children. May peace be brought unto the children.
