CBS Sportsline reported a couple of weeks ago that Spurrier's people had been contacted by UT alumni. The alumni dropped their pursuit when the team started winning. If Spurrier wants the UT job, he is going to have to sit out a year. Mack has earned his yearly mulligan and the AD isn't going to fire Mack until the team collapses. The Holiday Bowl could be a great start to a horrible 2004
I read at ESPN that Snyder wants him back but him and his wife aren't happy with the situation so they will discuss what he's going to do. I've read all your posts and all I have to say is remember Rick Petino? Spurrier is the same way, great college coach not so good in the pros. Wherever he goes in the college ranks he'll be able to get the job done. I didn't think Spurrier would work out in Washington, Let's face it, As far as Daniel Snyder goes, how will he ever get a quality coach if he is in the way of the coach and is to involved in trying to fix things with something he probably knows nothing about. Who wants to coach in a situation like that? He might get lucky and get the right coach one day........ I never thought it would happen in Dallas with Bill Parcels. But I think the Redskins are in for a long wait.
I was shocked when he left UF in the first place. He always sounded tenative and very cautious.....(in a very non-Spurrier-like way) when being interviewed prior to going to the Redskins. Snyder reminds me of Stienbrenner with the Yankees, Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks, and Al Davis with the Raiders....owners who can't go without "getting their hands dirty". At the root of this behavior is a very, very competitive-natured person. They don't actually intend to "meddle", but it turns out that "meddling" is what they ARE doing....to the detriment of the teams they own.
Technical correction Hey Claw, Spurrier's 1976 Tampa Bay Bucs were 0-14, not 0-16. That season was bad enough for we Bucs fans, let's not make it any worse in the rearview mirror !
oh, ok...forgot the year the NFL went to the 16-game schedule. I will edit my post...but still, it gave me a reason why he seemed like he had an inferiority complex when he coached clearly superior teams.
. Guess which team has made the most money in the NFL this year? The Redskins. If Snyder can reduce the buyout just a little bit(maybe a few million) he can easily afford to get rid of him in a mutual agreement. If not Texas this year, he can afford to wait for next year and do announcing till then, then take that job after Mack gets fired next year. Another loss to OU and he's done.
He wins because he spends the big bucks, not because he meddles. He was a divisive influence on his team this year. When is the last time the Yanks won a WS? They are almost entering the realm of the Braves of the 90's.
