a few people here, both osu and ou, that i have talked to today say gundy was right in what he did. word on an osu forum is that the bbg who wrote the article will be interviewed on good morning america on tuesday morning. also from the osu forum, the majority polled in the okc area side with gundy, not the hack that wrote it. this is interesting in the fact that the okc area is heavily ou support over osu. Was Coach Gundy right? Or wrong? In his reaction towards the article? 76% Right 18% Wrong 7% Not Sure http://www.surveyusa.com/client/Poll...0-ecab4f6d8a58 i find it interesting the the oklahoman is now spinning it as gundy brought it on himself by not being upfront and telling reporters what the qb situation was, has a history of not being upfront with the paper, etc. same hack excuse crybaby guilblow uses. like the press has the right to know every little thing about the team so the opponents can too. there was an article today by another oklahoman columnist. they appear to be circling the wagons. big surprise.
i had trouble editing. here is the quote by barry trammel. http://newsok.com/article/3132674/1190652688 in other words, he didn't tell us what was going on. waaaaaaa....... when doesn't get told every little thing, the coach is being "dishonest". same line guilblow used. do all hacks get the same newsletter telling them how to spin chit?
Mike Gundy Sorry if that has already been posted but its worth a look if you havent seen it. Jenni Carlson wrote this article dogging OSU QB Bobby Reid: http://newsok.com/article/3131543/1190555866 And Gundy, offended, lashed out on her in this press conference: http://youtube.com/watch?v=5VytIZZzee0 What do you think? I love it, as he clearly cares for his players and doesnt agree with the rudeness of the article.
Re: Mike Gundy I am with him 100%. I bet his players know who has their backs. I'm not too high on the media, they think too highly of themselves anyway. Naturally I've heard other media "elitests" attacking him. But I liked what he did.:thumb:
Okie, I followed the Hornets situation in OKC very closely as I am an avid fan of the team. Trammel is one of the worst at that paper in reporting the facts. He routinely skewed every possible bit of information and statistic in his city's favor. Especially when it came to attendance figures which are easily found out by the public. Yet he would do it anyway. Now, this has little to do with the Gundy situation, yes, but it does give background on the fact that in my view he's not a very fair-handed journalist at all. That whole paper seems very suspect to me. One thing that I've thought about since initially reading and hearing about this is the fact his mother was feeding him chicken soup after the game. First, is that a bit unusual? I'm going to say probably it is, considering we view our football heroes as just that -- heroes that are in some sense larger than life. They're not though, especially at this age in their lives. I didn't say careers because it isn't his career. It's a means to an education. (Or should be.) Secondly, even if one does consider it a bit odd for him to allow his mother to do it, is that really a quality to knock about someone? I'm not suggesting it is a characteristic worth lauding, but I'm not so sure it's one to knock either. Shows his mother cares, that he's comfortable enough to let her do that, and that they love each other. This is somehow twisted into a bad thing in this article, which when you really think about it, is a horrible example to set. She's actually reinforcing the macho guys-don't-cry image with that view, and then turns right around and she also questions his toughness with injuries. That's pretty amazing. Loving family? Family support? Taking care of your own health? Sins apparently in her eyes. Makes you wonder what kind of article you would have written about you should you be caught doing something that was actually criminal. Brian ~Go Tigers!~
I've had my experiences with Jenni Carlson and cay say, this is her MO. Back when Bama was playing OU in our home and home series she wrote an article on Stallings that was very far off base. Opinions? Some. Just mistaking the facts? OH YES. I wasn't very familiar with her at the time so I drop a quick email note to her linking her to some data she could refer to in the future if she decided to write more about the upcoming game. There wasn't any criticism of her article, no mention of the opinions she had and I was shocked when I received the email response from her. The response was laden with some of the most unprofessional remarks I had ever seen. In fact, I don't think I've seen anything worse since that day. The OU folks I was talking to at the time didn't have a nice thing to say about her. Period. And, as we've seen in the last few days, it is simply her MO. Both do have something in common. They never let facts get in the way of a story. With Dodd, even though some of his articles (well, a lot) don't cover the stories truthfully, as Sr. Writer for Sportsline I can see him having a little more leeway in what he writes. But, you've nailed it on the head here drc. Her story is best described as a beat writers story. Not an opinion piece.
My spat with a certain columnist is Al. is along the same line. The key word is columnist..... The perception they hold is they are not reporters and slaves to facts, but as a columnist they are given latitude to express an opinion. It really means they are too lazy to work for real stories and want an elevated title to compensate for their lack of journalistic skills.
There are very few writers, anywhere, that follow their job titles as they should. You make a great point here and a very valid one. One thing I wanted to add about about Dodd is Gundy did say, "...if you are going to write something, write about me..." That's one reason I give Finebaum a little leeway. He is serving more of an editorial role now than a beat writer. However, I have to say I look at people like Cecil Hurt who has an editorial type position as well as covering the team and yet he still maintains a great deal of professionalism. Using facts, I might add.
