Marijuana is illegal though, and far less harmful than guns are. I see what you are saying though, and I agree, but weed can't kill you.
What do you think they're looking for on background checks, zodiac sign? Point being, there are laws on the books for this, yet the kooks keep slipping through the cracks... or gaping holes.
Right but shouldn't there be better enforcement? Do people that purchase guns have to get some kind of mental eval? I wasn't aware of that if so.
That's exactly what Swerved has been saying. Enforce the existing laws, not make additional ones that will add to the list of laws NOT being enforced.
Not my best day today.... so is there some sort of mental evaluation a person must go through to purchase and own a gun?
I know right. I may have a tough time. I remember taking a hunter's education course when I was about 15, well, I didn't really take the course, my best friend did, and I just showed up for the day of the test, took it and got my orange card. I've never been convicted of a felony, however the mental evaluation part might not go too well.
Like most issues, I have mixed feelings. I own guns, but I also feel that a lot of responsibility comes with that. I'm against most gun control, but I'm against the NRA, too. Those fanatics fight ANY kind of controls, even those that make a lot of sense. If the NRA had its way, machine guns, grenade launchers, and light artillery would be legal. We just need to use common sense about things like large magazines. The last magazine ban was too tight, not allowing over 10 round magazines for rifles and was repealed. But no limits is bad too, take that 31-round pistol magazine from the Arizona murders or the 150-round drum magazines available for mini-14s and AK-47's. There is no legitimate civilian use for such magazines. There is no legitimate use at all for a pistol magazine that extends 6 inches beyond the handle of the pistol. No police or military forces use such a clumsy magazine that I'm aware of. I want to see two gun control issues addressed: 1. Limit the number of guns a person can buy legally. Right now there are dealers in this country who will sell 200 assault rifles a day to single person, usually for cash, and they end up in the Mexican drug wars. The average citizen exercising his right to self defense and hunting, buy's less than one gun a year. I think limiting a person to five gun purchases a year more than satisfies our constitutional rights without allowing crooks to take advantage of them to become gun runners to criminals. Exceptions can be made for legitimate collectors, who are willing to provide records to show that they are not reselling them. 2. Keep the gun out of the hands of kooks and criminals. If I go to buy a gun, I like to walk out of the store with it. In time, our computer databases will be complete and fast enough that we can have this and still be insured that kooks and criminals are not allowed to purchase a gun. Until that time passes, I don't mind if I have to wait a week to insure that I'm legit if it helps keep guns out of the hands of kooks.
