Miles responsibilities: 1. LSU 2. Players in the program 3. Players he's recruiting No Player is above the welfare of the program. If recruits don't honor their commitments than why should coaches not treat scholarship offers the same way. Personally, I think it should be binding for both sides but that's not the way it is.
HEY, you guys quit dissin my Parish. The quintessential Sportsman's DREAM. Sucks for hurricanes though.
but think how many more people would be discussing miles losing RR and JJ. i don't think the decision sits well with most but it sits better than two top recruits in your state heading out of town. funny how the dads were the problem in both cases. from now on, we only recruit kids with single mothers.......WHO'S WITH ME!!!!!!!!!!??
this part really seems shady to me. somehow, i cant see skip in the back of the crowd doing this "Miles was asked at a press conference late Wednesday if Benton still had a scholarship offer by Wednesday morning before Benton signed with Auburn. Before Miles could answer, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva – located in the back of the room - frantically waved his arms to attempt to get Miles not to answer. But Miles answered, “No.”" http://www.thenewsstar.com/article/20090205/UPDATES02/90204039/1006
freaking guilbeau was the one who asked the question. did he turn around after he asked it to miles to gauge the room's response or is he just trying to increase his status as a renegade hard nosed reporter? i don't have a problem with him asking the question, but he needs to stop with the self glorification.
I hear what you are saying but apparently you do not. It is still a justification. We scream from the top of our lungs when politicians make shady deals or stick pork in a bill, unless it is to our benefit. That is hypocritical and saying "it happens everywhere" does not make it a wash. At the end of the day, it is nothing more than a justification. Go take a look at the Jackson thread and tell me you don't see the irony. People talking about the "proper way" to do things and "why wait until the night before NSD", is just damn funny. Pointing fingers is all fine and good, but in this case, there is only one direction to point. It's not at Randle's father either. Though he was wrong and apparently the catalyst, Miles is driving the boat, and chose the direction he took with Benton and Randle.
Agree with you. Many are saying there would be a larger uproar if he had lost Randle. Probably, though many went into yesterday thinking he may go elsewhere anyway, so how big of a shock would it have been? I think if it had come out why Randle went to Oklahoma, Miles would have come out looking okay, but the program would have taken the loss of a big time recruit. The question comes down to, do you have the attitude of "win at all costs" or "do it the right way". The ones that believe the prior are justifying the decision and would have ripped Miles apart if we lost Randle. The ones who believe the latter would have supported Miles for not caving. But Miles wouldn't be able to please everyone. That's for sure.
:geaux: While I agree that this whole situation is pretty crappy and wish it could've gone down differently, bottom line is that if Benton would've taken care of his academic business two years ago or one year ago we wouldn't be having this conversation. He, like many other kids these days, don't think about the academic side of playing football until it's too late sometimes. Unfortunate situation to say the least. :LSU231:
maybe i don't hear you then. you are saying that faced with the same decision you'd take benton over RR and would be able to sell that to the tiger nation? i have no problem calling it a "justification". in a situation where there is no winner no matter what the decision, any path taken would need to be justified including justifying taking benton over RR. i don't understand your sticking point. did it suck the way it went down?? absolutely. i feel bad for the kid. it was a sh!tty thing to do. but so is laying off workers and companies aren't going to stop that in favor of watching their business go down in flames in tough times. i'm just not going to act like some super hero mask has been pulled off of miles' face and we learn now that he's just human or some kind of villain. recruiting is a dirty business on both sides, to think miles was never going to get his hands dirty is unrealistic. any other coach in his spot would've have done the same thing and if they didn't then they wouldn't be coaches for very long. sometimes you're the screw-ee (JJ) sometimes you're the screw-er (benton) but in a dirty business someone is usually getting screwed.
Maybe, but the fact is we ARE having this conversation. So I don't think how we got here is very relevant. If we want to take the stand of "you should have taken care of your business already", then don't give him the offer in the first place. To extend the offer, then take it away the night before signing day is wrong.
