That fits with something I've heard about John Wayne, apparently he didn't like phucking swear words in his movies. I heard that he was first cast to be in the Frisco Kid, playing the Harrison Ford role. John Wayne objected to parts of the diologue in the script,... delaying things until, he finally pulled out because of scheduling conflicts. He would have been great playing that character.

The sex scene is on our football field. I watched for a while, as the 'food fight' scene was being filmed at the UofO student union building. I know/knew 4 people with minor roles in the movie. As far as I know, Toga parties were invented in Eugene. Toga parties were all the rage for many months, togas everywhere. Still see kids wearing them. The Otis Day video is shown at the end of the 3rd quarter, during games at Autzen.
Kirk Douglas was named to the Cowboy Hall of Fame and told the story of encountering John Wayne right after he did Lust for Life. Wayne asked him why he took the role of the tortured, obsessed insane failure, Vincent van Gogh. Douglas said "Because I'm an actor, it was a dramatic role with intensity!". Wayne stepped closer, put his face right in Douglas' and growled, "Don't ever let me catch you playing a weak sniveling character like that again."
The singer that sang the Otis Day part changed his name to Otis Day and has been touring as Otis Day and the Knights ever since.
