The Pistol was not only the best to wear an LSU uniform, he was the best to ever play college basketball..

    Pete Maravich.

He redefined how the game was played.

Can you say that about anyone else (LSU players that is)?

    Jarrett Lee.
    Oops. Wrong thread. My bad.

I'll go with Chris Jackson. Best crossover dribble and quickest release I've ever seen. A record 283 consecutive foul shots at one point. 48 pts in his just his 3rd game as a starter. 53 pts in his 5th game. He provided me with so many great memories in the Deaf Dome.

Without looking at anything but the title of this thread, this is so easy. Pistol Pete.

    Honorable Mention

    Billy Cannon
    Bob Petit
    Shaquille O'Neal
    Rudy Macklin
    Bert Jones

From a total outsiders perspective, it has to be Pistol Pete. He was everything and a bag of chips when I was a kid and it was a shame I didn't get to see him on tv hardly at all.

You've had your share of great athletes but that names stands above all the rest imho.

    God rest his soul.

Ummm... Yeah, Shaq. Whenever teams are faced with a superior Center, they throw in multiple defenders to foul said superior center. Statistically-speaking, centers are the worst free-throw shooters. It's referred to as "Hack-s-Shaq", but he's not the only center it happens to.

How did Maravich re-define how the game was played? I know that he is considered the most entertaining player, but I have never heard anyone refer to him redefining the game or how it was played.

Shaq hands down. Get real folks. Unless you are restricting this strictly to college (which would be lame), its Shaq. Well ahead of Pistol Pete on any reputable NBA all-time great poll. Best college player I ever saw in person at LSU was Chris Jackson. He didnt rule in the NBA, but dominated in college--I'd put him ahead of Barkley, Shaq, Drexler, Olajuwon etc as far as college play.

Someone in antoher thread was saying LSU fans arent as into basketball because it hasnt done as well as other programs here. That may be true, but LSU's best all time atheltes were almost all basketball players. LSU's top 5 basketball player of all time would probably beat any other schools all-time top 5.

    Would be an awesome lineup:

    Center - Shaquille O'Neal
    Forward - Bob Pettit
    Forward - Rudy Macklin
    Guard - Chris Jackson
    Guard - Pete Maravich

    Bench players:

    Greg "the Cookie Man" Cook
    Stromile Swift
    Glen "Big Baby" Davis
    Ethan Martin
    Howard "Hi-C" Carter
    Tyrus Thomas
    John Williams
    Vernel Singleton
    Brandon Bass
    Darrell Mitchell

I am tempted to add Garrett Temple to this list as a defensive specialist
and Ricky Blanton as an all around player

I'd like to see that game against North Carolina's or UCLA's best ever
