Byrd, LaFell and Toliver as starters. Tolliver, Brown and Benton as backups. One or more of these true freshman will see the field this coming season. Conceivably, if all pans out, we may be looking at the greatest amount of talent at the WR slot in college football history. Not saying that they all blow it up this year, obviously there aren't enough footballs to go around. But just looking back at what players were on a particular team in the same year, this could be the most talented group ever, when all is said and done. All 6 of these guys project to the NFL as wideouts.
Neither has redshirted is that correct? Chris may be best served if he would at least ask for a redshirt (he'd probably be granted) to creat some seperation between he and LaFell and Byrd, which might improve his chances....that is, if he can't improve his own chances via hard work. Who knows? Jared, IMO, is probably more laid back. I mean, I'm NOT saying that he doesn't WANT to have more playing time (who doesn't, right?), but I think he knows that baseball is what will give him the best shot at a pro career--and I don't believe that realization was ever lost on him when he signed to play both sports at LSU. I just think he plays football because he likes football....but like Chad Jones, he LOVES baseball. Our depth at WR beginning in '08 (in terms of eligibility remaining): Byrd, Sr. LaFell, Jr. Chris Mitchell, Jr. Jared Mitchell, Jr. Terrance Tolliver, Soph. Ricky Dixon, RS-Soph. Chris Tolliver, Freshman ???D. Brown, Freshman??? Tim Molton, Freshman (likely RS) Deangelo Peterson, Freshman (likely RS...if eligible) Jhyryn Taylor, Freshman (likely RS)
All will be drafted, assuming Toliver learns the position (as we should expect - was only a true freshman this year). Depending on how the Mitchell's develop/move positions, I could see two getting a fair amount of PT, but at least one. Brown & Benton appear to be more physically college-ready than the other guys, so I think we see Tolliver, Molton, Taylor, and Peterson redshirt. Nobody is talking about Molton, but the coaches must see something in him.
Players don't redshirt after their freshmen year unless due to injury. If he puts space between he & LaFell, he takes away space from himself & Toliver/incoming freshmen. Either he develops & gets into the line-up or doesn't. That may be true. I wouldn't be suprised to see Jared switch to play baseball full-time, but the question is whether he could afford it because he's got a full scholarship with football. 11 WRs... I have to think one moves positions.
11 WRs... I have to think one moves positions.[/quote] I think we may see a transfer or two to other schools. Our program is at an elite level now and the odd men out could probably only play special teams and DB. My guess is they wouldn't see much playing time even if they switched to DB. So they either are satisfied riding the pine and possibly playing special teams are they transfer to gain playing time at other schools. It always happens and is just the way it is. In the end it benefits LSU if lesser scholarship athletes transfer because it opens up more schollys out of the total 85.
I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade here, but first of all, NO ONE knows for sure if he will qualify. Secondly, If I'm not mistaken, he doesn't even live with his mom....I think he lives with his grandmother. Lastly, I live in the very small town of Ocean Springs, I just talked to a coach after reading this thread and he said that he hasn't heard any of this. I'm not trying to flame, but take this thread with a grain of salt. No one knows anything.....not even DeAndre at this point.
Is Jared Mitchell on scholarship for baseball? I could see him focusing on just baseball if D'Andre Brown and Tolliver both end up qualifying at LSU.
Dual sport athletes (when one sport is football) are on football scholarships, which is much better than a baseball partial scholarship.
