i think the article is a great and deserved tribute to mf considering how he was a perceived weakness by so many.

yes 3 games started is a small sample size and the writer could have also mentioned how poorly flynn played at other times (MissSt 06 and seccg), but a direct comparison to jr is the best way to show how good a qb mf is

    What if's, what if's.

Water under the bridge. I think Jamarcus was a great QB. He made a lot of clutch 4th down throws. Who is to say that LSU would have been in position to win those games without him. It's all speculation.

Matt Flynn is a good QB and I'm comfortable with him leading the offense (and shudder a little if he can't make it Saturday ... it may give Perriloux a shot to shine but Flynn is a proven comodity). I'm looking forward to this season.

Now if you want to talk about the one that got away, you should have seen the fish I almost caught.

The main part I didn't like is that since MF has only started three games, he took two of JR's worst games and blamed the losses on him.

JR was and is one of our best ever. I hope MF will be remembered that way, as well. But this was a little premature.

Why must we bash JR in order to praise MF?

I disagree with his statement that JR has better touch on the long ball than Flynn. True, he can rocket the ball further down field than Flynn but I think he was reluctant to air it out because he was scared of over throwing his recievers. It seemed to me that JR almost always under threw his recievers causing them to slow down and break stride to catch the ball. Flynn I think has better touch (ie. more often than not hits the WR in stride) though it is just not as far downfield as JR was capable of.

    IMO
JR has great God given talent. He was and is raw. He believed his arm could get him out of any situation and it did some times.

But what I believe (and what I think the spirit of the article was) is that college football teams are more consistent with a Matt Mauck/Flynn type QB rather than a gunslinger. LSU has so many weapons on the team that the QB does not have to try and do everything to win the game or Championship.

To win games in high school, coaches have to get the ball in the hand of their most skilled athlete. To get that done, HS coaches usually put the best athlete on the team at QB and let him out "athletic" the defense.

In college, the best athletes on the team typically are moved to the skilled positions. So a college coach must get skilled guys the football in favorable match ups against the defense. Getting them that ball is done by the QB; therefore the QB should be a smart, patient, well studied guy who does not hurt the team by trying to do to much.

That is the point of the article.

Aztiger.... where's the source for the article?

Hopefully Flynn can win us a championship, but he still has a looong way to go before he gets close to what JR accomplished...

I think both QB's are special in their own ways and styles. Bottom line: you can't go wrong with either one of them. Not much point in comparing the two; they are like good apples and oranges:D We should be grateful for these wonderful times!

Matt Hayes had an agenda against Russell last year. I am too lazy to find the quote, but Crowton, when hired, said he was salivating to work with Russell. Can you imagine. JR threw 8 picks all of last season, I can only recall 2 (AZ and UT) that were really bad. I saw Matt Flynn, make some bad reads, and so on. I like both, and am glad we can win with both. The UT loss and UGA loss are so unfair, we lost both those games due to being worn out from Katrina and we all know it! I don't understand negative articles. He could make the point of the stregnths of Flynn and Crowton, with out throwing JaMarcus under the bus! :geauxtige

Does anybody think the results of the first two games would have been different w/ Russell playing QB?

In Flynn's three starts, LSU has rushed for 767 yards (better than 5 yards per rush). I don't care who is playing QB, the offense is going to look great when you run the ball like that.

In each of LSU's four losses the previous two years, they failed to rush for 100 yards.

When Flynn is asked to win a game with his arm, you can start making comparisons.
