The 17 points bothered me a bit at halftime but adjustments were made and the chief shut them out in the second half, which was pretty impressive. And yes I know it was UAB but past teams struggled against teams that were suppose to be inferior like UAB.
What I really liked with the improved passing game was that with a team like UAB in the past, we would end up with 300 yards rushing and 180 yards passing. Tonight it was the opposite. We could have run for 300 if we wanted to. I loved the fact that we took this opportunity to continue to give Mett the confidence he needs to head into SEC play. That was refreshing.
I had the opportunity to attend and i watched the game closely from some of the best seats I've ever had. The D line play was bad. Jordan Allen did well, the rest did not. C- as a unit. Not enough QB pressure, missed tackles, and they got hashed up the middle in the run game. They did not play well. DBs were beaten way too often but they didn't make us pay as much as they might have except in the 2nd quarter. Also the DBs didn't play well against UABs perimeter running attack. Between the D line and the DBs UAB out gained us on the ground in Tiger Stadium. That's not good. D. Beyond that the rest of the units did well with the exception of Landry dropping 2 TDs. FWIW, I called the Beckham FG return TD. I saw him drop all the way to the back of the end zone right before the kick and told my wife he's going to break a big one and take it to the house. She called BS. 109 yds later she had to eat her words.
Linebackers were bad enough to give them a C- . . . or worse. I can't give a A+ to special teams with those two shanked punts. He also had a couple of boomers, but he must find consistency, soon.
I think that sums up the few issues we can take with our defense. The second quarter seemed like they went on cruise control and were lacking effort, but that changed after half. Question: Did I miss something in the second half or did Jordan Allen dissappear again just like last week? Is there a battle at the position and we work him one half and others the other? I'm curious because dude had several plays and then. . .where is he?
Yes, he gets to the ball carrier great, but he needs to wrap up better. Also, DHunter needs to be in there more and more. He looks like our best on the D-line.
Wouldn't be surprised if Mack gets canned this week after that defensive performance against BYU. I think the UT boosters will active and loud this week. AD may not have a choice.
I agree. The QB telegraphed the play when he'd head back 10 yds behind the line of scrimmage, and hand off the ball to the back who would run through the same HUGE hole every time. It was painful to watch, mostly because they were able to do it and make our line look like bumbling fools.
Hunter appears to get a lot of the 2nd half reps. I would like to see Hunter in even more. He is definitely our most talented DE. Allen would make for a solid rotational guy.
