Sally Clausen is a professional and has certainly done a good job wherever she has been. She might make a fine chancellor for LSU. It's the shenanigans of her inside connections to the board and perhaps the governor that possibly reek. Her academic administration credentials are excellent, but there are many other, perhaps even more qualified candidates out there that should fairly be considered, too. I fear many of them will not apply and risk displeasure at home if they think Clausen is a political shoo-in. LSU deserves the best. If Clausen is the best, she must beat the rest of the best fairly and openly . . . not be annointed because of political and personal connections in the usual Kingfish style.
As Red kind of mentioned, the circumstances involving her name & the position opening make me very hesitant about having her lead the LSU system.
On that note, I saw a tease for News 2 last night that said Blanco was going to reveal why she vetoed the bill, but I didn't see the broadcast. Do you, or anyone else, know what her stated reason was? Second, and this is clearly my own ignorance shining through, but I thought that phone companies had been de-regulated. If so, why would they need government approval to provide cable?
Didn't see the broadcast, but here is the explanation from The Advocate: Dereg happens on both the fed and state level. The feds deregulated phones and utilities years ago, but Louisiana has yet to get the memo. The article explains pretty well how cable companies negotiate franchise fees directly with local governments. I am not sure if that gives them exclusive rights for that area.
