You have no way of knowing how the purchase of instruments will impact the manufacturer. These instruments may come out of the manufacturer's inventory requiring no labor and creating no jobs.

This bill was sold as an infrastucture improvements and job creation bill, not as a spending bill. Volcano monitorring should have been a budgeted item for the Department of the Interrior or the Corps of Engineers. It reeks of pet project to me.

All of these projects will/should create a job or two and update equipment, but obviously the opportunity cost of doing these projects is what people are questioning.

Monkey's may fly out of my ass, too. You're stretching find find ways to deny that spending of any kind stimulates the economy.

You are all underestimating what a major volcano monitoring equipment upgrade involves. It's not just a couple of new computers and better software in the lab, it is hundreds of sensor stations in the field in six states including Alaska and Hawaii. They include seismographs, ground deformation GPS sites, tiltmeters, infrared sensors, satellite radar imaging stations, video monitor cameras, and manned observation sites.

Dozens of contractors are employed, dozens of equipment brands are used. Hundreds of people will be involved. Consultants and accountants will be paid, trucks will be bought, and lodging and per diems for installation crews spent.

The sarcasm in his voice and his segue into "the eruption of spending" sorta belies your conclusion, IMO. It's clear he was searching for an item to specifically object to, and all the better that it would serve as the basis for an attempted witticism. Can you imagine him saying the same thing about hurricane monitoring? I know I can't. Jindal is no more than an unctuous, hyper-ambitious politician, and he's also a superstitious nutjob. Can't stand the guy. (Or was that redundant?)
