Some players are great practice players but when they get in the game it is a different story. Via Elvis Gurbec..QB from the Chiefs I played 1 year of college basketball and I wasn't that great in practice but everytime I played in the game I scored whether it was a shot from the outside, a lay up, etc. I played NAIA Division 3, it isn't that much different. I played with some talented guys, 1 from Brooklyn. Scotty Pippen played basketball NAIA in college. I could shoot shots from the outside but I couldn't dunk. The difference in players today is this....... I practiced 4 to 8 hours every other day from about 14 years of age on, after school and on weekends. Freethrows too. I played pickup games but I practiced shooting the most. I had a love of the game which I don't think a lot of players have this today! Practice vs game play and the speed of both are totally different than each other for those that haven't played sports. You can't simulate game conditions................. I just find it hard to believe that players can't shoot anymore... Its a basic fundamental. All I think about is when I always went to the courts its the 1st thing I ever did was shoot a shot, even before dribbling. I couldn't dunk so maybe thats why, I didn't have all the hot dog dunks and moves to play with that soem of these players might.
Sure these guys might be able to shoot the ball a little better but chances are they are a little smaller and not as athletic. What happens when the smallest guy on the floor is 6'5" with a good handle and great athleticism? What happens is that player gets burned and then taken out of the game because they can't play defense. These guys are suited for playing in smaller conferences or lower divisions where players aren't as athletic and the good shooter can get by on defense and shine on offense.
