I won't argue with much in this post. It is realistic. I think LSU could very well become the 800 pound gorilla of the College FB World. LSU has no competition for the top prospects in Louisiana from any in-state schools, unlike the major schools in Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida, and Louisiana is rich in football prospects. On the other hand, fans of our neighboring football programs are so rabid that we can expect them to up the ante to compete with LSU. I suspect they will "find" the money to get more competitive. They may not be able to find money to solve the homeless problem or fill every pothole in their state, but they will find money to improve the attractiveness of their football programs if LSU is stomping them every year. You also may see a "segregation" of NCAA coaches and NFL coaches in the future. NFL head coaching salaries are not that much greater than the top salaries in college anymore and the job security is not nearly as good. College head coaches may see their jobs as better than NFL jobs sometimes. Nick Saban alluded to that and the coach at Iowa said he is staying there for the near future anyway, even when he might have landed an NFL job. Others may see it the same way. Which means Ole Miss and other schools may be just competing against other colleges for the coaches. The football arms race continues.
Ole Miss needs to "hit up" their grads like Shepard Smith for money. They ahve plenty alumni. The question is - do their alumni "want it" like ours do ? Don't begrudge us for wanting to pay the best coach in America the most money, he deserves it ! I heard Shepard refer to us as "that team from Louisiana" two or three days ago. He can't even bring himself to say "LSU" ! I LOVE IT !!!
what's really funny, is that even after Saban has announced his decision to stay, people are still throwing rumors that he's leaving to the NFL... One guy on the yahoo forums said he was gonna go to cleveland... of course it was a Canes fan.... How typical... Geaux Tigers!!
Ole Miss is in decent shape for now BUT the money isn't happening. The folks that are pushing to change Col Reb are PUSHING alumni money away from them. A local alumni for Ole Miss contributes $8000.00 every year. He stopped this year and wrote a letter to the school saying he would no longer support a school that rapes it's mascot.
I agree with basically everyone here. Some of my friends have said it was good for the SEC but you can tell they have that look in their eyes of "Oh...crap"
The banishment of Col Reb from the Ole Miss program will definately have a negative impact on the alumni at Ole Miss. My wife is an NLU grad, was on the dance line, and was very active in her alumni association. When they changed the school's name to ULM she quit contributing and is no longer affiliated with the school in any way. I can see this happening at Ole Miss. Tradition is everything in College footbal. On yeah, bring back the old LSU logo!:cuss:
