It was all pretty cool except for Aretha Franklin's butchering of "My Country Tis of Thee" and that absolutely horrible poem. Obama has a great speech writer and he did give one hell of a great speech. Now lets see if he can deliver. I wish him luck. Did anyone else notice that bullet proof glass was a bit low? oh and we can't forget; We ask you to help work for that day When black would not be asked to get back. When brown can stick around. When yellow will be mellow. When the red man can get ahead man. And when white will embrace what is right.
Other than the economy, what are all these huge problems (always and only created by Bush and the Republicans) that are affecting us from day to day? How has our life dramatically changed during the last eight years that was screwed up by Bush? I'm just curious because I hear all the hate but I'm just wondering what it is. I hear Bush hated minorities. What's that based on? I hear that the world loved and respected us before Bush but now hates and disprepects us. What's that based on? The Iraq war?...and the proof is what? Are we ignorant enough to base our opinions on what ABC, CBS, CNN, and MSNBC tell us to think? Based on the media and internet, I was expecting the eastern skies to split and the trumpets to sound today. It didn't happen. I hope and pray Obama does well as the country needs leadership. I also hope he doesn't rely on the worst House and Senate leadership this country has ever known to guide him. He also needs to keep his wife from influencing his decisions. We certainly don't need another Hillary in the White House. I'm sure I won't agree with any policies with a liberal twist but I hope he supports the military and maintains a strong stance on terrorism. Now is not the time to smoke a joint and chant "make love, not war". I also hope we end this nonsense of pretending the man can do no wrong. Ask the tough questions. Challenge his decision making. Hold him accountable and make him do a good job. So far Obama has been given a free pass but that won't help against our enemies. For some reason we annointed him as the greatest even before he was elected. I hope he can live up to expectations. I just don't want four years of excuses still pointing the finger at Bush. With total control and 12 months of claiming to have all the answers, I expect immediate results. If not, we need to show a bunch of Democrats the door. Put your money where your mouth is and get it done.
Definitely the two low lights of the entire ceremony. What the he11 was wrong with Aretha? Sounded like her voice was completely shot along with a terrible rendition.
I'm having a problem opening the link. Was this actually part of his speech or a poem, etc? If so, all I can say is :dis:.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pEH37JIgBU here is the link to the youtube video, maybe the embed is screwed although it still works for me. That was a quote from the Benediction given by Dr. Joseph Lowery.
Sorry, this is not an original quote from Dr Lowery, it is actually from "The Negro National Anthem" by James Johnson, Lift Every Voice and Sing .
Considering the source...I'm not surprised. It's not the first time he has made inappropriate comments. I thought this was 2009...not 1969 or 1869. As long as there's a benefit or sympathy to be had, we'll continue to pretend nothing has ever "changed".
part of the inaugural prayer by rev lowery. this last part was omitted: I would not like them here or there. I would not like them anywhere. I do not like green eggs and ham or white folk. I do not like them, Sam-I-am. he may as well kept rev wright to give the benediction.
I recognized it but was suprised (well, not really) that it was used. This poem made sense when it was written over 100 years ago but trying to suggest that nothing has changed since then is just ludicrous. It's amazing to me how some of the most hatred, racist people in this country hide behind the title of Reverend.
