It's too bad that they don't march Tenor Sax anymore. Also of note, a lot of the other bands have a lot more members that Tiger Band. Not to mention that the color gaurd and Golden Girls are included in the 325 so the instrumentalists actually make up around 280-295 depending on the year and how many they take for the color gaurd and Golden Girls.
Well, some of those giant bands march a lot of people just holding horns because they can't play very well or can't play at all. Tiger Band doesn't have superior marchers and the drum-corps style is not especially innovative anymore, but Tiger band has soundpower. In the stands or on the field, Tiger Band marches musicians who can play very well and very loudly. Why, in heavens name, would they not march tenor sax anymore. It's going to become a drum and bugle corps! Is nothing sacred?
The quality of marching is not horrible, it may not look as clean at times because while some bands ie. Tenn, and Bama only do 1 or 2 shows the whole year, Tigerband is committed to do 4-6 different shows. The other problem with those other bands is that they have a ton of woodwinds to beef up numbers, but brass is where you get the "soundpower" as you call it, which is partially why the Tenor Sax is no longer a section because all they really did was play the same part that is covered by the Baritone section in the brass. I always love the fact that a 90 member pepband from LSU can outplay and be heard better in Neyland stadium that its own 400+ member band who is also miked through their stadium.
I'm sorry, I still remember the Bama game last year when I watched the Golden Girls equivalent in the $1 Band changing in front of me. On the sideline. Classy!
I got my cardio in for the day! Question for TB Alums/present members: The crowd starts to clap "in time" with y'all as you take the field. I notice that it's always out of step-does this bother you at all? Curious if it effects your counts and whatnot.
