I think you are flawed in your basic premise. Since the dawn of humanity society has placed value in the male female bond not because it was religious, but because it was necessary for our species to continue. That is how it filters into our religions and then into our laws. So the root cause of the benefits is still the value of the union.

my understanding is that you can still make babies even without being married. marriage is popular because people are religious, and people like security. women in particular love it because they want to steady fella that will feel obliged to stick around. men like it because...well i dunno really. but it isnt about propogating the species. half of th guys in the NBA would be willing to testify to the fact that you can make 6 kids via 7 different women without being married, and that keeps the poulation growing just fine.

that is true but the government shouldnt be weighing in on these sort of social/psychological issues. if i want to be a single parent that a bad decision on my part, but i dont need the government telling me that.
