You make some interesting points Martin, I have never thought of it like that. I have a daughter and I would kill anyone who tried to exploit her in a sexual nature, but you bring up some very interesting points.

Here is another thought, does anyone ever wonder if child pornography keeps these sick bastards from actually going out and seeking real children?

Real children have to be obtained for child pornography to occur. Who's child would be sacrificed if it kept more child molesters indoors?

I think it really comes down to being this simple: Society places value in hetero sexual unions because society can receive benefits from those unions (future members). For this reason there are financial incentives to encourage those unions. The homosexual union would receive the benefit (a cost to everyone else) with absolutely no chance of producing the benefit.

I don't even buy into the argument that banning gay marriage is discriminatory. The two unions are not equal, and biologically they never can be.

I would buy into allowing gays to enter contracts for things like medical decisions and visitation rights, but not things like pension survivor benefits and health insurance.

Well then we should ban the marriage of old people who can't have kids, and anyone who is sterile as well. If financial incentives are all we really care about.

There have been studies done with mixed results. Some suggest that porn addicts are introverted loners whose fantasies and perversions are safely resolved in a victimless setting. Others suggest that they create a market for exploitation that would be greatly reduced if it did not exist and so must share blame. Still others suggest that porn stimulates erotic fantasies to the point that pervs must move on to actual perversions like drug addicts.

I'm not sure any of them are entirely valid and all are probably true to an extent. Like all things, there is a pragmatic balance point to be found. Most porn is harmless, most would agree, yet most would also agree that we should restrict it to adults and that some porn is harmful and destructive and should be illegal.

right, and producing real child pornography is a horrendous crime. just like my example with murder videos. watching the vid doesnt murder anyone. making the vid does, so that is the crime.

Regarding whether the states should decide if gay marriage is legal, my opinion (at the moment) is that it should be all or none. To me, it's somewhat equivalent of allowing states to decide if women should be able to vote. If it had been up to the states, we may still have one or two remaining (Miss?) that don't allow women to vote.

I don't understand why it's such a big deal to allow gays to get married. I feel they should get the same benefits and tax breaks as married couples. They obviously do not "choose" to be gay and face many hurdles during their lifetime. I'm guessing our descendants in about 100 yrs will look back at us and think WTF? the same way we look back and wonder why blacks and women were treated so poorly during the early part of our nation's history.
