nobody likes us, but we consume 1/4 of the worlds consumed oil, they have to like $$$$$$$$$.

South America should look at us like Charlie Sheen, and themselves as the drug dealer.

If the Arabs decided to not sell us oil at all we would have to get it somewhere. Before America died an economic death any American president would do whatever he had to do to save the country. When the oil finally does run out and a gallon of gas is 20$ I believe the major powers will fight for the last reserve. If we don't find an alternative to gas to fuel our cars the world will go to war again. This is my opinion. I have no link and I'm sure it can be" shot full of holes". Imperialism may be dead but I can see the major world powers fighting to secure their supplies. Americans will be demanding action of some type if unemployment was 30% and inflation was doubling every other year because we couldn't get the oil we needed. In this senerio I can see something being invented to give us a reason to send in the marines. Weather it's right or wrong no American president can let the country die without putting up a fight.

    Yeah but terrorist are.

And where do terrorist come from? The middle east
What is the source of most of the money going into the middle east? Oil
Who is the number one importer of oil in the world? The US
Where does 61% of oil the the US consumes go into? Motor Vehicles
    What powers motor vehicles? Engines

Therefore more efficient engines lead to less oil consumption which decreases funds available to terrorists which are a threat to national security.

ANWR is the largest undeveloped oil field in North America to my knowledge, although Canadian Oil Sands hve not been developed to their potential. The most liberal of estimates of crude in the US is 21 Billion. It includes oil sands which is too expensive to develop right now and oil shale which requires fracking to extract right now so that's completely out of the question because it destroys water supplies and renders the area unlivable.

500 Billion is simply laughable and completely out of touch with reality. There's not even that much recoverable in North America (adding Canada and Mexico to the mix), much less the USA.

However (and I can't stress this enough) this has nothing to do with how expensive gasoline is or will be. Oil companies want to drill and extract, but they will not refine and produce because this would flood the market with a usable product and the price would drop. That's less money in their pockets so they have no incentive at all to refine. All they want to do is claim the land, extract the oil and guarantee future profits by doing so.

I know it's impossible for anyone to be more knowledgeable than you on any subject, but you're woefully ill-informed on this matter.

What exactly is the incentive for automakers to dump billions into developing a 300 hp engine that burns 50 mpg? We spend millions every year for the current technology so there's no real demand for it. We want it, but apparently not so badly that we are content to deny purchasing the most fuel efficient of automobiles.

Also, technology does have its limits. No one in the entire world has anything remotely approaching such a product. At this point I doubt it's even possible with petroleum.

This is why I am very glad that I bought a fuel efficient vehicle.

Actually, I look forward to the day that I am no longer dependent on gasoline. That way I can give the middle finger to the middle east and tell them where they can put their oil tankers.

with every item that is for sale on earth, the seller tells you what you should pay. you are then free to purchase or not purchase. i kinda wish oil companies would refuse to sell you anything, just to teach you a lesson on the concept of free trade.
