because we dont need it. gas is pretty affordable. reference kylek post earlier about actual fuel cost.
But only buying tiny fraction of the gas we currently use is an option. We just don't want to do it. Nothing will change that except $$$.
I'm told it is because of environmental regulations that we place on the cars...but I've been mislead before. A more efficient engine is not matter of national security
I think it is. If the oil stops the economy dies. No taxes , unemployment etc. We must have oil to run our country. Anything that cuts the need of oil is national survival. If we need less we are less dependent on other countries
There aren't 500 billion barrels of recoverable oil up there. We can't count the unobtainable. The most recent (2010) US Geological Survey estimate of the proven recoverable reserves in ANWR are 896 million barrels. ([ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Refuge_drilling_controversy"]LINK[/ame]) 500 billion is an absurd number.

Anything that cuts the need of oil is national survival. If we need less we are less dependent on other countries. You can bet if the oil stoped long enough the marines will roll. We have to have it. If we had higher mpg autos we would need less. It is national survival and national security. How long would the public put up with 20$ a gallon gas before the army marched into the oil fields and took it?
Before they march on oil fields...this wont happen. Now they might hijack a gas truck, but even that is doubtful. True...thankfully there is some in the ground for us to go get. Yeap..what is the chant...oh yeah, drill here drill now. Need less...maybe...but we will still NEED IT. So your "solders be coming" theory would still apply.
why can't we just start making deals with South American countries, there has to be and endless supply of oil down there, like in Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay.
