Southern Miss had really fallen off in the past few years. I'm friends with a lot of huge USM supporters, and Bower had pretty much lose the program. The loss to 3-9 Rice, a team they routinely dominated, was pretty much the last straw. The did force Bower out. They asked him to resign, he refused, and he was subsequently fired. The Rock was near vacant I am told toward the end of the season. Students organized flyers distributed around the campus touting USM's past successes and how they had fallen greatly under Bower.
