Walmart had 5" Brandwine's here in Houston...well the Lake Houston/Atascocita area. I was excited about trying them...oh well.
My mom's dad had the best seed for tomatoes. It was an old creole seed that was in all likelyhood unique to his 6 acres in Bayou Blue, Louisiana. My dad sas the first time he went to my grandparents house that they had a 48 ice qt ice chest filled with tomatoes, and there were only 2 tomatoes in it. He would never share the seed, and as he got too old to tend his field it was lost. Its just one of those things you take for granted growing up. There isn't much I wouldn't give for one of those tomatoes or some of his purple hull field peas.
I have two plants, a Big Boy and a Creole. I picked about 6 smaller sized tomatos off of them the other day. Being that this is my first shot at gardening I planted them in big pots so they aren't growing huge. Anywho, with those fresh tomatos I made some home made salsa. Chopped onion, minced garlic, 2 hot jalapeno's, 4 mild jalapenos and 1 banana pepper (for some sweetness). Salt n' pepper to taste.
still no fresh tomatoes from either my tiny garden of a few veggies, or from my dads large garden. but my parents brought me a sack of veggies this morning from their garden. fresh greens, beets, green beans, yellow squash, radishes, banana peppers, baby yellow onions, lettuce. looks like a veggie dinner tonight. i was gonna grill a rib eye steak to go with them, but im not sure if i even need that with all the veggies i have. i dont want to be cooking during the game, so i am gonna fix all the veggies this afternoon then heat them up so i can eat during the game. its gonna be good eatin tonight! *drool* edit: i think ill skip the steak and make a pan of cornbread. down home veggies and cornbread for dinner. yummmmm......
after having some cherry tomatoes and yellow pear tomatoes from my plants this week, i finally picked the first two large tomatoes this morning, a couple of nice red beefsteak tomats. i see bacon and tomato sandwiches in my very near future! *drool*
Tomatoes are about done around here, but my uncle brought me a half-dozen cantaloupes last week that were great. I'm about tired of them now . . . but watermelons are coming up.
my tomatoes are just getting going good. i have some big fat juicy beefsteaks i need to pick today. i see more sandwiches.
Here's my favorite way to eat tomatoes: First you delicately place the tomato on your kitchen counter. Take a 6 pack of Abita Turbo Dog, carefully remove the top from each bottle and consume. Gently take tomato and caress it ever so softly, play with it, let it know that you love it and will never harm it. Serves 1. (this guy)
