It's funny, I thought Geirhart should have won it in 2009 when Ingram did, his stats killed Ingrams, but it ain't about stats or the best player.
I agree, Gerhart had a legit argument. I get that there are a lot of components that might make someone the winner, not just stats. Although it's clear that with Henry's number of carries the last few weeks, there was one purpose to that, and one only. For that, I hope he doesn't win. I just can't see how McCaffrey should be the one to not get an invite. He's head and shoulders above the Clemson QB, IMO.
Here is the deal. He did not do well, regardless (please don't say irregardless) in the big, showcase games when we were ranked two and later. If he had done well, in those same games, they would only be inviting him to NYC. It works both ways. Imagine....
I don't think anyone disagrees that the lack of production from Fournette in the Alabama and Arkansas games killed his chances to win the award. But he rushed for 1700 something yards, he never turned the ball over, he didn't have to carry it 30 plus times a game to do it, and he added 18 catches for over 200 yards, with 18 touchdowns. He deserved an invite.
