Possible. Could happen with a Beretta just like the victim said. From another board. Beretta with safety that moves left-right thru rear of trigger guard (behind the trigger): a. Set up for right handed shooter - pushing the safety button from left to right side of the receiver would activate the safety. b. Lay gun on it's left side. Safety button now protrudes up/out from trigger guard. c. Dog lands on trigger guard. One toenail deactivates pushes on the safety button (deactivating the safety) and a different (or the same) toenail enters the trigger guard and presses the trigger. If safety button is reversed for a left-handed shooter, the opposite positioning of the gun could lead to the same result.
