And the 51 weeks the Tour isn't playing there the grounds crew shortens the rough and slows down the speed of the greens.
Until they built Atchafalaya in Patterson, that was the only choice in St. Mary Parish. There's a 9-hole in Berwick and a 9-hold in Franklin. The one in Franklin is a better layout, a big reason being they have two distinctly different tee boxes on almost every hole. On all but 2 holes in Berwick you play the same tee box twice, just 15-20 yards further back the second time.
Ironically I can usually reach the par 5's with my 3rd shot. My problem is I can't seem to reach the par 4's with my 2nd and that is what gets me into trouble. Having to get up and down for par is a bitch but its making my short game better.
There is a program and I can't remember if it's sponsored by the PGA, USGA or both called "play it forward." Golf would be a lot more fun for players if they moved up a tee box or two. Think about playing courses where YOU hit driver and short irons on a lot of par fours and can reach par 5's in 2 strokes sometimes just like the pros. Most male touring pros can hit the ball in the 300 yard range, can you? I can't, never could, never will be able to. My drives rarely go 225 yds, but I have a limit, I won't play a course over 6000 yds, normally play from the tees in the 5600-5800 yd range. Golf is tough enough, but playing a bunch of holes that you have no chance of hitting in regulation, at least to me, is ridiculous unless you're into self flagellation. I think if more people moved up they'd enjoy the game more and probably play more. Put your ego away and move up and enjoy the game more.
Amen. When I was able to play a lot and practice a lot, I played from the back tees on a pretty tough golf course at the Air Force Academy. As I got older, got married, & had kids I obviously wasn't able to play or practice as much. At least I had enough sense to move up to the white tees. That and taking the 2 & 3 iron out of the bag helped.
My driver isn't the problem, not to say that I couldn't use 15 to 20 more yards but I can get it out there in the 280-300 range fairly consistently. Okay 270-285 or so. The issue I have is I am so wildly inconsistent with my 4,5 and 6 iron and sometimes my 7. I am going to have another "fitting" because I'm starting to doubt that the last guy did me square. That or I just need to figure out why my distances are so jacked up. A big part of it is mental and poor mechanics "lifting" causing me to either hit it thin or over correcting and forcing myself to stay down and taking a half acre of fairway with me before my club even gets to the ball. In short, it is a shit show from tee to green. My favorite line is "My golf game is a lot like jacking off, its real fun for me but no one else really wants to see it"
I've been around the game a long, long time and that's the first time I've heard that line. If you're shooting in the 80's and from your post you know where your weaknesses are. Have you ever taken a lesson? If not, I strongly recommend one. 9 times out of 10 it results in an improvement to your game.
I have, spent a lot of money years ago at GolfTec and well, it is what it is. I have a couple of guys that help me from time to time, one is a PGA Pro and the other could be but I don't like to bother them a whole bunch with "free lessons" but I am going on Wed to a new guy that I will pay for and see what that gets me.
If you had spent all that money for guitar lessons how good would you be now? I never took golf lessons and probably be a lot better now if I had. But after 2 years ago guitar lessons I'm a hell of a lot better a hell of a lot faster than if I hadn't. I'm never going to be a rock star but you are never going to be a touring professional golfer.
A couple of beers/drinks in the 19th hole could go a long way for some tips/suggestions. Good luck with the lesson.
