There are advances in the equipment of all sports. I used to play tennis fairly quickly. Mostly against my brother. We both had cheap alumni rackets and we were a pretty even match. One day I played an old classmate whom I would usually beat even though he had an oversized racket with a sweet spot. This day he had a new racket and was kicking my ass. After a few games he let me use his old racket and the tables turned immediately even though I had no experience with that type but racket.

I remember having a set of Hogan irons. I don't remember if I matched them persimmon or metal woods. I would imagine the only golfers playing the balata ball today are the pros. Any other golfer would be crazy for not using the surlyn or whatever they are called toady ball.

I had a set of Staff tour blades (including 1 iron) and hit Pro Traj Titlelist 100s. Even hitting them pure they were a 1 round ball. Still the best purest test IMO. I had my blades till a couple of years ago and when I hit them cleanly I got similar distance as with the new clubs.

You had one too many clubs in your bag. Not even God can hit a 1 iron. When I converted to metal woods, I had a driver, 3, 4 & 5 woods. I think the longest iron was a 3 iron. That was in the days before the multiple wedges.

I heard a joke one time about an old Scottish caddy. He and his group were in a violent thunderstorm and he kept insisting that the foursome keep playing and told them there was nothing to worry about. When one of the golfers questioned his sanity he picked up a one iron and pointed it toward the sky and roared in his Scottish brogue "Not even God can hit a one iron."

Not Even God Can Hit a One Iron

this is the famous quote by the colorful Lee Trevino after being hit by lightning on the Butler National golf course in 1975,..Trevino's quip came when he returned to the course in 1976 for The Western Open Championship, and a reporter asked him what he would do if a lightening storm approached the course and he was on it. His response: " I'd hold up my one iron, because not even God can hit a one iron.

I think the first time I heard it was in a Trevino interview. God, I miss the Merry Mex playing.

I know but weirdly enough I could hit my 1 iron better than the 3 wood....now that’s when they were woods.
