Got to play Colonial! Had a fraternity brother from the Dallas-Ft.Worth area whose father was a member there, he invited me to come visit for a couple of days. Remember two things, how hard the course was and I don't think the members were allowed to fix ball marks! Couldn't believe the number of ball marks on the greens.
I tried to start my downswing by driving with the right foot then allowing the hips and shoulders to follow. Old football injuries kept me from getting the back swing to the parallel position. Later in my golf career I was able to pretty much able to eliminate the violent hooks or slices. That enabled me spend more time on my short game. I played for 40+ years in Colorado and I don't think I ever had a straight putt outside of 6'. And that old line about putts always breaking away from the mountains wasn't true in all cases.
Wow. That's strange. I wonder what the rationale was behind that? They must have cut off member play two weeks prior to the tournament to get the greens in shape.
The most famous course I got to play was St. Andrews, followed by Pebble Beach, then Cherry Hills. At St. Andrews if there divots that hadn't been repaired, I fixed them without holding up play. Same with ball marks. Unfortunately some of the clowns playing that day didn't realize they were damaging sacred ground.
Sorry, I was being facetious. I couldn't figure out why there were so many ball marks so I made that up.
Me and three buddies did two weeks in Scotland @ 15 years ago. Best golf trip ever! Weather was remarkable, brought two short sleeve golf shirts, rain gear, turtle necks , knit cap, all weather golf gloves, etc. Weather turned out to be like spring in the south. Ended up having to buy some short sleeved shirts (probably owned 40-50). Played The Olde Course, Carnouustie, Prestwick, Troon, Turnberry, etc. Would like to have done Ireland, too old now.
Wow. That's a hell of a trip. How were you able to score. I was visiting our satellite tracking station in the UK and took a few days vacation and played St. Andrews on the way back. The in laws reimbursed me for the trip and said Happy Birthday. Best damn present I ever received.
Sounds like my home course now. We tell customers if they ever have a level lie or straight putt come tell us so we can fix it.
Damn. Sounds like you play at a tough track. Many years ago the golf course at the Academy was ranked in Golf Digest's Top 100 courses. It's a Robert Trent Jones design.
